Quick answer: Run a dishwasher checklist in this order: filter and sump, spray arms, loading, detergent and rinse aid, the tap and inlet hose, the drain hose and sink connection, the door latch, then listen to a cycle for fill, wash, heat and drain. Most dirty-dish and slow-drain complaints end at the filter. The parts that follow are the drain pump, the inlet valve, the heating element, the door lock switch and the detergent dispenser, each matched by the model number on your sticker.

Before you start: the sticker and a towel
The model sticker is on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, visible with the door open. Write the full model number down now, because every part on this page is matched by it. Switch the dishwasher off at the wall before you reach under the arms or into the sump, and keep a towel handy, because the sump always holds a cup of water.
The 15-point dishwasher checklist
Checks 1 to 8 cost nothing and settle most calls. Checks 9 to 15 are done by running a cycle and listening.
| # | Check | How | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Filter and sump | Twist the filter out, rinse it, feel in the sump for glass, bones and labels | A blocked filter causes dirty dishes, slow drains and smells | Clean, run a hot cycle empty |
| 2 | Spray arms | Spin each arm by hand; clear the holes with a toothpick | An arm that will not spin or has blocked holes leaves a shelf dirty | Clean; arm by model if cracked |
| 3 | Loading | Tall items, pot handles and the cutlery basket clear of the arms | A blocked arm washes nothing above it | Reload |
| 4 | Detergent and rinse aid | Dispenser door opens during the cycle; rinse aid topped up | A dispenser that stays shut or empty rinse aid means wet, streaky dishes | Dispenser (table below) |
| 5 | Tap and inlet hose | Tap fully open; hose not kinked behind the machine | Low flow gives a fill error before the cycle starts | Hose (table below) |
| 6 | Drain hose and sink connection | Hose rises in a loop before the sink; spigot on the sink waste clear | A new install with the spigot blank still in will not drain | Reroute, clear |
| 7 | Door latch | Door clicks shut; lights come on; cycle starts | A latch that does not click leaves the machine dead | Door lock switch (table below) |
| 8 | Power | Panel lights; try another appliance in the socket | No lights and no click: the socket or the switch, not the pump | Another socket, then an electrician |
| 9 | Fill | Start a cycle and listen for water arriving within a minute | Silence or a hum with no water: the inlet valve | Inlet valve (table below) |
| 10 | Wash | Listen for the spray hitting the door | Filled but silent: the circulation pump or its capacitor | Licensed repairer |
| 11 | Heat and dry | Open the door mid-cycle; the water should be hot | Cold water, long cycles and wet dishes: the heating element | Heating element (table below) |
| 12 | Drain | Water left in the sump at the end of the cycle | Filter clean, hose clear, still standing water: the drain pump | Drain pump (table below) |
| 13 | Leaks | Towel under the door, torch under the kick panel | Door seal, hose clamp or pump body | Seal by model; hose; pump |
| 14 | Error code | Note the code on the panel | The code names the fault circuit | Brand code guide (below) |
| 15 | Smell | Sniff the filter, the sump and the drain hose | Food in the sump or a drain hose without a loop | Clean; reroute the hose |
Where the free checks end and the parts begin
Checks 9 to 14 point at a part. On most dishwashers sold in Australia in the last ten years the parts that fail are, in rough order, the drain pump, the inlet valve, the heating element, the door lock switch and the detergent dispenser. All five are listed by model number and all are jobs for a screwdriver and a towel, with the machine off at the wall. Water left in the bottom has its own page, dishwasher won’t drain; the filter clean is in how to clean a dishwasher filter; dirty dishes in dishwasher runs but dishes come out dirty; wet dishes in dishwasher not drying dishes.

How each part is tested before you buy
Drain pump. Filter out, sump empty, drain hose clear and water still standing at the end of the cycle. Reach into the sump with the machine off and spin the pump impeller; a jammed or free-spinning-but-silent pump is replaced. The step-by-step is in dishwasher won’t drain.
Inlet valve. Tap open, hose unkinked, the machine hums at the start of the cycle and no water arrives, or the fill error shows within a minute. The valve sits where the inlet hose meets the machine. Brand pages: LG IE, Bosch E18, Hisense E1.
Heating element. Water cold when you open the door mid-cycle, cycles running long, dishes wet and a heating error on the panel. Which dishwasher heating element is listed for my model covers the types.
Door lock switch. The door closes but nothing lights, or the cycle stops when the door is nudged. Dishwasher won’t start walks through it.
Hoses. A drip at the back of the machine or a kinked inlet hose: inlet and drain hose replacement.
Error codes
Check 14 is the shortcut. Every brand’s code list is on the site: Bosch, Westinghouse, Fisher & Paykel, Omega, Hisense, Haier, LG and Samsung.
Door seals, racks and wheels
Door seals, racks, rack wheels and spray arms are model-specific and not on our shelf. For a quote, send us your model code with a photo of the part.
When to stop and call a licensed repairer
Stop when the machine fills but stays silent, when water collects in the base and the anti-flood float keeps tripping after the hoses and pump are proven, when the panel is dead with power at the socket and the door switch replaced, or when anything smells of burning. Those are the circulation pump, the base tray and seals, or the control board, and the board in particular is a repairer’s call. A call-out typically runs $100–165 before parts. Is it worth repairing a dishwasher puts the quote against the age of the machine.
Monthly: the five-minute version
- Filter out and rinsed, sump wiped.
- Spray arm holes clear, arms spinning free.
- Rinse aid topped up, dispenser door clean.
- Door seal wiped along the bottom edge.
- Hot empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar in the top rack.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?
Monthly in a family kitchen, and straight away after a load with bones, rice or broken glass. It takes two minutes and it is the first item on every repairer’s checklist.
Why is there water left in the bottom of my dishwasher?
Filter, sump, drain hose and sink connection first. If all four are clear and the water still stands at the end of the cycle, the drain pump has failed. On a new install, check the blanking plug has been knocked out of the sink spigot.
Why are the dishes still dirty?
Blocked spray arm holes, a jammed arm, overloading, or a dispenser that is not opening. Water that is not getting hot also washes badly, which points at the heating element.
Why won’t my dishwasher start?
Power at the socket, then the door latch. If the door clicks but nothing lights, the door lock switch is the usual part. If nothing happens at all, test the socket with another appliance before buying anything.
What does the error code on my dishwasher mean?
Each brand uses its own codes, and the code names the circuit that failed, not the part. Look the code up on the brand page linked above, then follow the checklist for that circuit before ordering.
Is it worth repairing an old dishwasher?
For a drain pump, inlet valve, element or door switch, usually yes: the part is a fraction of a new machine. A circulation pump or control board on a machine past ten years is where the sums change.
