Quick answer: E1 on a Hisense dishwasher means the machine did not fill with enough water in the allowed time. In order of likelihood: the tap is not fully open, the inlet hose is kinked, the screen in the inlet hose end is blocked, the water pressure is low, or the inlet valve has failed. Open the tap, straighten the hose and clean the screen, then restart. If E1 returns with the tap wide open and a clean screen, replace the inlet valve.

A Hisense dishwasher showing E1 has waited for water that did not come. The control board opens the inlet valve, counts the water through the flow meter or watches the level switch, and if it does not see enough water arrive within its time limit it stops the program and shows E1. Nothing is broken inside the tub; the problem is on the way in.
That makes E1 one of the easiest dishwasher codes to clear, because the water supply is entirely accessible without tools. This guide takes the causes in order from the tap inward, explains how to tell a supply problem from a failed inlet valve, and covers the HSCE, HSGE, HS and HSFE series machines sold in Australia along with the Hisense-badged models built on the same platform.
Hisense dishwasher E1: the causes, ranked, and how to check each
Codes are listed as they appear on the display. Where two generations of the platform use different codes for the same fault, both are shown. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering a part.
| Check, in order | What you are looking for | What it means if you find it | Fix / the part |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The tap | Tap under the sink not fully open, or turned off after plumbing work | The machine cannot draw water | Open the tap fully |
| 2. The inlet hose | Kinks or crushing behind the machine or under the sink | Flow is restricted | Straighten the hose and refit the machine without trapping it |
3. The inlet screen | A fine mesh in the end of the hose where it meets the machine (or in the valve inlet), silted with grit | Flow is slowed enough to time out | Unscrew the hose at the machine, pull the screen and rinse it under a tap — fit the Dishwasher Aquastop Water Inlet Hose Smeg Omega DWA Series 0331 |
| 4. Water pressure | Weak flow from the tap into a bucket; another appliance sharing the supply | Low pressure fills too slowly | Run the dishwasher when nothing else is drawing water; have pressure checked if it is always weak |
5. Aquastop or safety hose (if fitted) | A hose with a boxy valve at the tap end that has tripped | The safety valve has closed | Replace the safety inlet hose — fit the Dishwasher Aquastop Water Inlet Hose Blanco Omega Bellini 0331 |
6. The inlet valve | Tap on, hose straight, screen clean, and still no water; no click from the valve when the program starts | The valve coil or diaphragm has failed | Replace the inlet valve — fit the ELECTROLUX DISHLEX WESTINGHOUSE DISHWASHER INLET VALVE 0172 |
| 7. Float switch | E1 alternating with a flood code, or water in the base | The anti-flood float is up and the board will not open the valve | Empty the base and fix the leak first |
| 8. Flow meter or level switch | Water clearly arriving but E1 still shows | The board cannot count the water | Clean the pressure chamber; replace the flow meter or level switch if the code returns |
Start at the tap and work inward
Almost every Hisense E1 is cleared before you touch a part. Open the cupboard and turn the tap fully anticlockwise; it is often left half-open after a plumber has been. Pull the machine forward and look at the inlet hose for kinks. Then, with the tap off, unscrew the hose at the machine end and look for the small mesh screen: it silts up with grit and scale over the years and slows the fill enough to time out. Rinse it, refit, tap on, restart.
When it is the inlet valve
If the tap is wide open, the hose is straight and the screen is clean, and the machine still shows E1, listen at the start of a program. A working inlet valve clicks as it opens and you hear water. Silence means the valve coil has failed; a click without water means the diaphragm is stuck. Either way the valve is replaced as a unit. It sits just inside the machine where the hose connects, is held by one or two screws and a clip, and is a twenty-minute job with the machine unplugged and the tap off.
E1 that comes and goes
An E1 that appears only some days is usually pressure: a shared supply, a tap that is nearly closed, or a screen that is half blocked. Clean the screen and check the tap before assuming the valve, because a valve tends to fail completely rather than occasionally.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.

Frequently asked questions
What does E1 mean on a Hisense dishwasher?
The machine did not fill with enough water in the allowed time. Check the tap, the inlet hose and the inlet screen; if they are clear, the inlet valve has failed.
How do I fix E1 on a Hisense dishwasher?
Open the tap fully, straighten the inlet hose, clean the mesh screen where the hose meets the machine, and restart. If E1 returns, replace the inlet valve.
Can I reset E1 by turning the machine off?
You can restart the program, but E1 returns unless the water can get in. Fix the supply or the valve first.
How do I know the inlet valve has failed?
With the tap on, the hose straight and the screen clean, listen at the start of a program. No click and no water means the valve coil is dead; a click with no water means the valve is stuck.
Why does E1 appear only sometimes?
Low or variable water pressure, usually from a shared supply or a half-closed tap. Clean the screen and open the tap fully before replacing anything.
Where is the model number on a Hisense dishwasher?
Open the door and look at the sticker on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, for example HSCE14FS or HSGE15FS. Use it to match the inlet valve.
