The first digit names the system, and three codes account for nearly every fault an owner sees: i10 for filling, i20 for draining and i30 for water in the base.

i10, i20, i30: the three that matter
Almost every AEG dishwasher fault is one of these. i10 is fixed at the tap, the hose and the little screen where the hose meets the machine. i20 is fixed at the filter in the base of the tub and the drain pump impeller behind it, where glass and food collect. i30 is water in the base and will not clear until the base is dry; unplug, tilt the machine to empty it, and look for the leak at the door seal, the hose connections and the sump.
When the part is the pump, the valve or the heater
A machine that still shows i20 with a clean filter, a clear impeller and a straight hose has a failed drain pump, which hums without moving water. A machine that still shows i10 with the tap open and a clean screen has a failed inlet valve, which is silent when the program starts. i60 with cold dishes is the flow-through heater on the circulation pump, tested for continuity and replaced as an assembly.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.
