What does Samsung 5E mean?
5E is Samsung’s drain error code. When the machine displays 5E, it has attempted a drain cycle and the water level sensor has confirmed that water is still present in the drum after the allotted drain period has elapsed. The machine then halts the cycle to prevent overflow.
The code is also displayed as SE on older Samsung washing machines (roughly pre-2012). Samsung changed the display from “SE” to “5E” because the two characters look similar on a 7-segment display and caused confusion. The fault condition and the repair are identical regardless of whether your machine shows 5E or SE. Some Samsung front loader models display this fault as 5C—again, the same underlying drain fault.

How to fix Samsung 5E step by step
- Run a Spin-only cycle first. If water is sitting in the drum, select Spin (or Spin+Drain) to attempt one more drain. If the pump is working but was briefly overwhelmed (e.g. high-suds situation), this may clear the fault.
- Power off and unplug. After attempting the spin cycle or if the machine has already halted, turn it off and unplug from the wall. Wait two minutes.
- Drain residual water via the filter port. The pump filter access is behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine (front loaders). Place a shallow container beneath it and slowly open the filter port to let water drain gradually.
- Remove and clean the pump filter. Turn the filter cap anti-clockwise and pull it out. Remove lint, coins, or debris. Rinse under running water, refit, and tighten clockwise.
- Check the drain hose. Pull the machine away from the wall. Check the hose for kinks. Confirm the outlet end of the hose sits no higher than 100 cm above floor level. If the hose is routed over a high cabinet or wall bracket, re-route it lower.
- Test the drain plumbing. Pour water into the standpipe by hand to confirm it drains freely. A blockage in the household plumbing can cause 5E even when the machine and its hose are fine.
