Quick answer: The Samsung DC error (also shown as dC) means an unbalanced load — the drum cannot reach spin speed safely. Redistribute the laundry and rerun the spin; that clears most cases. If DC returns with a balanced load, worn shock absorbers or suspension rods are the usual cause.

On a Samsung top loader (WA10J, WA10H, WA11M and similar), DC almost always means worn suspension rods — the drum sits off-centre, trips the unbalance sensor and the spin aborts. Redistributing the load clears it once; if DC returns every wash, the rods are the repair — a 30–45 minute DIY with no special tools. What does Samsung DC mean?
DC is Samsung’s unbalanced load error. During a spin cycle, the machine monitors drum vibration and rotation speed. If the drum cannot reach the target spin speed because the load is distributed unevenly—causing excessive vibration—the control board displays DC and reduces the spin speed or halts the cycle to prevent damage to the machine or the installation.
The code appears as both DC and dC depending on the display style of the model. Both mean the same thing.
On older Samsung washing machines, a similar unbalanced load code may appear as UE or U6—these are functionally equivalent to DC. See the Samsung error codes hub page for the full list.
What causes Samsung DC?
| Cause | Likelihood | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Laundry bunched to one side of the drum | Very common | Redistribute load manually — free |
| Single heavy item (e.g. bath towel, jeans, duvet) washing alone | Common | Add a couple of similar items to balance — free |
| Small load in a large drum (load too light to balance) | Common | Increase load size — free |
| Machine not level on the floor | Moderate | Adjust levelling feet — free |
| Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods | Less common (usually older machines) | Replace shock absorbers — $50–$100 part |
| Drum bearing wear (causes consistent vibration regardless of load) | Less common | Technician repair or machine replacement |
How to fix Samsung DC step by step
- Pause the cycle. Press Pause or Start/Pause to stop the machine. Wait for the door lock to release (usually 1–2 minutes).
- Open the door and check the load. Pull items apart if they have bunched or tangled together. Spread them evenly around the drum. Single heavy items should have a similar-weight item added alongside them—for example, wash a single large bath towel with one or two smaller towels.
- Close the door and restart the spin. Select Spin and allow the machine to ramp up. If the load is now balanced, the cycle will complete without DC returning.
- Check the machine is level. Place a spirit level across the top of the machine. Adjust the front levelling feet by hand (turn clockwise to lower, anti-clockwise to raise) until the machine sits evenly. Tighten the lock nuts on the feet once level.
- If DC appears consistently with balanced loads, inspect the shock absorbers. On front loaders, the shock absorbers are located at the front or rear of the drum, connecting the outer tub to the machine frame. Worn shock absorbers will show visible oil leakage or will feel loose and loose when pushed. If shock absorber replacement is needed, use the Samsung parts search or the Part Finder to find the correct part for your model.

Frequently asked questions
Is DC the same as UE on Samsung machines?
Both DC and UE indicate unbalanced load detection. UE appears on older Samsung models; DC appears on more recent models. The cause and fix are the same for both.
Why does my Samsung keep showing DC even when I redistribute the load?
If DC returns consistently even after careful load balancing, the machine’s shock absorbers or suspension may be worn. Over time, these components lose their damping ability, making it impossible for the machine to stabilise the drum during spin. A machine that is not sitting level will also trigger DC repeatedly.
Can DC damage my Samsung washing machine?
The machine stops or slows the spin when DC is triggered specifically to prevent damage. Running repeated high-speed spins with a consistently unbalanced load or worn shock absorbers can accelerate wear on the drum bearings and outer tub. Address the root cause promptly.
Does DC appear during the wash cycle or only during spin?
DC typically appears during the spin phase, when the machine attempts to reach high speed. The control board monitors vibration and rotation consistency at spin speeds and triggers DC when the load imbalance exceeds its safety threshold.
I washed just one item and got DC — is that normal?
Yes. Washing a single heavy item (a bath towel, a pair of jeans, a pillow) is a very common cause of DC. A single item will always sit on one side of the drum during spin. Adding one or two similar-weight items balances the drum and prevents DC.
