Quick answer: The LG OE error code stands for Outlet Error — the machine cannot drain water within the allotted time. Cleaning the blocked pump filter is the fix in the majority of cases and costs nothing. If the filter and drain hose are both clear, a failed drain pump is most likely responsible—replacement LG pumps are available from $39.29 and take about 30 minutes to fit.

What does LG OE mean?
OE stands for Outlet Error. It is one of the most well-established and frequently occurring LG washing machine fault codes in Australia. The code appears when the machine’s control board has attempted to drain the drum and the water level sensor has not confirmed that draining is complete within the programmed time window.
OE applies to both LG front loaders and LG top loaders. The filter location differs between the two types (front loaders have a filter access panel at the bottom front; top loaders access it differently depending on the model), but the diagnosis process is the same.
What causes LG OE?
| Cause | Likelihood | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked or partially clogged pump filter | Very common — majority of OE faults | Clean filter — free |
| Kinked or blocked drain hose | Common | Straighten or clear hose — free |
| Drain hose outlet too high (above 100 cm) | Common (especially after installation) | Re-route hose lower — free |
| Failed drain pump motor | Moderate | Replace pump — ~$39–$40 |
| Pressure switch fault (water level sensor) | Less common | Replace pressure switch — $35.95 |
| Blocked household drain standpipe | Less common | Clear plumbing / call plumber |
How to fix LG OE step by step
- Cancel the cycle and select Spin+Drain. Before unplugging, try running a Spin or Drain cycle manually. This forces the pump to attempt drainage again and can confirm whether the pump is running at all.
- Power off and unplug. Once you have noted whether the pump is audible during drain, turn off and unplug the machine. Wait two minutes.
- Drain residual water from the filter access port. On front loaders, open the small flap at the bottom front of the machine. Place a shallow tray beneath it. Slowly open the filter cap to let water out gradually before removing the filter completely.
- Remove and clean the pump filter. Turn the filter cap anti-clockwise and pull it out. Remove lint, hair, coins, or any debris. Rinse under running water. Refit and tighten clockwise until firm.
- Check the drain hose. Pull the machine away from the wall and inspect the drain hose at the back. Straighten kinks. Confirm the hose outlet is no higher than 100 cm above floor level. If the hose feeds into a high standpipe, lower the insertion point.
- Plug in and test. Run a Rinse+Spin cycle. If the machine drains without OE returning, the filter or hose was the cause.
- Replace the drain pump if OE persists. If OE returns after all checks, the pump motor has likely failed. During the drain phase, listen for the pump—silence or grinding indicates a motor fault. Confirm your model from the model sticker inside the door frame and choose the correct pump:

- Check the pressure switch if OE still persists. If the pump runs and the water is draining but OE still appears, the water level pressure switch may be giving a false “water present” reading to the control board. LG pressure switch — $35.95.

Frequently asked questions
Is OE the same as OE1 on LG washing machines?
OE1 is in the same fault family as OE—both relate to outlet/drain errors. OE is the standard code; OE1 is shown on some LG models as a variant. The diagnosis and fix process is the same for both.
Does OE appear on LG top loaders and front loaders?
Yes. OE is used across both LG front loaders and top loaders. On top loaders, the pump filter location and access method differs from front loaders—consult your owner’s manual for the filter location on your specific model.
My LG shows OE but I can hear the pump running — is the pump faulty?
Not necessarily. A pump that is running but blocked by a clogged filter will hum normally while failing to move water efficiently. If the pump is running but draining slowly, the filter is the most likely culprit. If the pump is running and the hose is clear but OE still triggers, the pressure switch may be giving a false reading.
How long should the LG pump filter be cleaned?
LG recommends cleaning the pump filter every one to two months, or after washing items that generate heavy lint. Pet hair in particular accumulates rapidly in the filter and can trigger OE within weeks if not maintained regularly.
Can OE be caused by using too much detergent?
Excessive suds can slow drainage enough to trigger OE. If OE appeared after a high-suds wash, run a Rinse+Spin cycle, then clean the filter. Using HE-rated low-suds detergent prevents this issue recurring.
