Quick answer: Washing machine pump filter stuck, snapped or leaking after every wash? Drain the water out through the emergency drain hose first, then rock the filter anticlockwise by hand. A cracked cap, torn seal or snapped handle means a new filter or cap, matched to the model number on the sticker. Fisher & Paykel, Haier, Bosch and LG filters and drain hose caps are stocked in Australia and dispatched from Sydney the day you order when it’s in by 12pm Sydney time.

The filter won’t turn, the handle snapped, or it leaks every wash
The front loader flashed a drain code. You opened the little kickplate door, grabbed the filter handle, and it wouldn’t budge. Or it came out in two pieces. Or it went back in fine and now there’s a puddle after every load.
A stuck filter usually frees up once the machine is drained. A snapped handle, a cracked cap or a filter that leaks when seated needs replacing, such as the Fisher & Paykel Washing Machine Pump Filter for WH front loaders. Filters and caps run roughly $12–22, against $100–165 for a call-out to clear a blocked one.

Samsung and Hisense filter caps aren’t in stock right now. Search your model number on the site anyway, or send it through the contact page for a straight answer. Wondering how to drain a Hisense washing machine? The Hisense drain pump filter guide shows how to open it.
Before you twist: drain it first
Most “stuck” filters aren’t seized. They’re holding back a drum of water, and lint around the seal acts like glue. Take the pressure off first.
- Turn the tap off and unplug the machine.
- After a hot wash, wait. The water behind the filter can still be hot, and so can the pump. Never put pliers on a hot pump.
- Lay towels down and slide a baking tray under the flap. Keep a bucket handy; there’s often more water than one tray holds.
- Lower the emergency drain hose into the tray and take its cap off. Cap it when the tray fills, empty, and repeat until nothing runs out.
If that little cap is split or missing, that’s the drip you’ve been mopping. The Haier Fisher Paykel Front loader Drain Hose Cap is a quick swap.
Freeing a stuck filter without breaking it
- Grip, don’t lever. Wear a rubber glove and hold the handle across its full width.
- Rock it. Small, slow turns anticlockwise, easing back a little each time, until the lint breaks up and the seal lets go.
- No pliers on the handle. It’s plastic. Pliers crack it, and a snapped handle turns a free job into a replacement.
- Feel for a jam. If it turns a little then stops hard, a coin, hairpin or bra underwire is often lodged behind the filter. Keep rocking gently and pull out whatever comes loose.
If the handle snaps
The filter has to be replaced. Ease the broken body out anticlockwise, then look into the housing. Clean thread: a new filter matched to your model fixes it. Stripped thread or a cracked housing: a new filter won’t seal, and on most front loaders that housing is part of the drain pump, so it becomes a pump job. Bosch owners can check which Bosch drain pump fits your model, and the Bosch E18 error guide covers the drain code itself.
Why a pump filter leaks
- A torn, flattened or missing seal. The rubber ring on the filter holds the water back. Nicked or flat, it leaks.
- A cracked cap. Often a hairline crack you only spot once the cap is dry.
- Cross-threading. The filter went in on an angle and never seated.
- Hair or lint on the seal face. One strand is enough to make it weep.
To seat it, wipe the thread and seal face clean. Start the filter by hand, turn it anticlockwise until you feel the thread drop into place, then clockwise until it stops firm. Hand tight only. Run a rinse and check with a dry paper towel. Still weeping with a clean seal? Replace the filter, or for Bosch the Bosch Filter Plug Cap. If the water is coming from further back, washing machine leaking from underneath helps you find it.
The cleaning routine that stops drain codes
Clean the pump filter every one to three months, closer to monthly if you wash pet bedding, shedding towels or kids’ clothes with full pockets. Drain first, rinse the filter under the tap, clear the housing and seat it as above.
Brand walk-throughs: the Fisher & Paykel pump filter clean, Haier washing machine not draining, LG washing machine not draining and Samsung washer not draining. Most top loaders use a lint filter instead of a front pump filter; washing machine not draining, every brand covers where to look.
How to match your model
On most front loaders the model sticker is on the door rim, inside the door opening. On some it’s on the back panel or behind the kickplate door. Photograph it and use the full model. Fisher & Paykel’s J and P suffixes decide which listing you want, LG writes some models with a hyphen and some without, and Bosch stickers carry an E-Nr as well as the model.
Search the model number on the site, browse the washing machine parts store, or check the Haier model pages and the Haier parts range. Not sure? Send the model number through the contact page and we’ll check it before you order.
DIY or repairer?
This one is DIY. A filter or cap costs roughly $12–22; a call-out to clear a blocked filter runs $100–165 before parts. The job takes towels, trays and patience, not tools.
Get a repairer if the housing thread is damaged and the pump has to come out, if water is leaking from somewhere other than the filter, or if a drain code keeps coming back with a clean filter and a clear hose. That last one needs the pump diagnosed before anything bigger is bought. Leave mains wiring and control boards to a repairer.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Haier washing machine filter stuck?
Usually it’s water pressure and lint, not a seized thread. Unplug the machine, drain it through the emergency drain hose into a tray, then rock the filter anticlockwise wearing a rubber glove. If it turns a little then jams, a coin or underwire is often lodged behind it.
Can I use pliers on a stuck pump filter?
No. The handle is plastic, and pliers crack it, which means buying a new filter. Never put pliers on a hot pump after a hot wash either. Drain the water, let it cool, and use a rubber glove for grip.
What happens if the pump filter handle breaks off?
The filter needs replacing, matched to the model number on your sticker. Remove the broken piece and check the housing thread. If it’s stripped or cracked, a new filter won’t seal, and on most front loaders that means replacing the drain pump.
Why does my washing machine filter leak after cleaning?
The usual causes are hair on the seal face, a flattened or torn seal, a cracked cap, or a filter that went in cross-threaded. Clean the seal face, start the thread by hand and tighten it firm, not hard. If it still weeps, replace the filter or cap.
How often should I clean a front loader pump filter?
Every one to three months, and closer to monthly with pets, shedding towels or kids’ pockets in the wash. It’s the cheapest way to prevent drain codes. Turn the tap off, unplug the machine and drain it through the emergency hose first.
Do you have Samsung or Hisense pump filter caps?
Not right now. Search your full model number on the site in case that changes, or send the model number through the contact page. We’ll give you an honest yes or no before you spend anything, rather than a guess.
Grab the model number from the sticker, search it on the site, or send it via the contact page and we’ll match it. In-stock filters and caps are dispatched from Sydney’s Northern Beaches the day you order when it’s in by 12pm Sydney time.
