One light out over the cooktop
One side of the rangehood has gone dark, or it flickers when you switch it on. You unclip the lamp and find either a round LED module on two thin wires or a halogen lamp in a glass-fronted fitting. A 12V LED globe from the supermarket does nothing. That’s not bad luck. It’s the driver.

The one rule: match the lamp to the driver, not the look
Every rangehood lamp is fed by a small box: an LED driver or a halogen transformer, usually near the fan or behind the switch panel. The lamp has to suit that box.
- 350 mA LED driver. A constant-current supply that pushes a fixed current and lets the voltage settle where the LED needs it. It suits the 1W Arda and Technika modules. A 12V halogen or 12V LED globe on it stays dark or glows faintly.
- 4V LED driver. Runs the 3W Euromaid and Baumatic lamps. Only a lamp made for 4V belongs on it.
- 12V AC halogen transformer. Runs 20W halogen lamps. A 350 mA LED module on it has nothing limiting its current, so it flickers or dies at switch-on. Many electronic halogen transformers also need a minimum load, which is why even a 12V LED globe can flicker on one.

Read the label before you order
- Isolate the power, take out the grease filters and look for the driver or transformer. The label reads DC 350mA, DC 4V or 12V AC. On some hoods it’s hidden inside the body; if so, read the lamp instead.
- Check the wattage printed on the lamp: 1W, 3W and 20W are the common ones.
- Measure the lamp’s outside diameter, or the hole it sits in, in millimetres.
- Note how it holds in: spring clips, a twist ring or a glass cover.
- Check the connection: a small plug (male or female) or bare wires into a terminal block.
Match the base, voltage and wattage to the old lamp and to the model. Those decide fit; the shape of the trim ring doesn’t. LED retrofits don’t suit every rangehood, so a like-for-like lamp is the safe order.
How to match your model
Most rangehoods carry the model sticker inside the canopy, behind the grease filters, on the back or side wall. Copy every character, suffix included, and compare it with the model numbers in the listing title. How to replace a rangehood light
Isolate power first, every time. Many hoods plug into a power point in the cupboard above: switch it off and unplug. No plug? Turn off the rangehood’s circuit at the switchboard. Some hoods run their lamps at mains voltage, so the hood’s own light button is not isolation.
- Let a halogen lamp cool completely. They run hot enough to burn.
- Remove the grease filters.
- Prise the lamp ring or glass cover gently with a plastic trim tool. Spring clips flex; don’t lever against the glass.
- Ease the lamp down and unplug its connector. Don’t let it hang on its wires.
- Handle a new halogen with a clean cloth, not bare fingers. Skin oil shortens its life.
- Plug in the new lamp, press it home until the clips seat, refit the filters, restore power and test.
Plug-in modules and lamp assemblies are DIY. If the lamp is wired into terminals rather than plugged, or the hood is hard-wired and the job means opening its supply, that’s a licensed electrician’s job in most states.
When the lamp isn’t the problem
Both lights not working at once? Check the driver or transformer and the switch first. Two lamps rarely fail on the same evening. A new lamp that lights for a moment then dies points to the wrong driver type or a failing driver. Flicker on a halogen can be a loose plug or a tired transformer.

DIY or repairer?
Single rangehood lamps run roughly $25–40 and pairs $30–60. An electrician’s call-out typically runs $100–165 before parts, so a plug-in lamp is worth doing yourself. Stop at the wiring: terminal blocks, a hard-wired supply or a dead driver that has to come out of the hood. That’s work for a licensed electrician.
