Quick answer: Westinghouse (with Chef, Simpson and Electrolux on the same platform) is the cheapest oven to repair in Australia: elements $30 to $58, fan motors $35 to $43, and the widest oven parts range in the country. Omega and Euromaid are next with elements $26 to $38 and fan motors $33 to $38, on shared platforms. Smeg costs a little more per part but its elements are standard shapes at $26 to $40. Bosch is well supported but the most expensive of the four. Most oven repairs are an element, so element price and access decide it.

Ovens fail in one place far more than any other: the heating element. Bake, grill and fan-forced elements burn out with age, and the symptoms are unmistakable, no heat on one mode while the others work, or a blistered element that trips the safety switch. After elements come the fan motor, the thermostat or sensor, the door seal and the lamp. Which oven is cheapest to repair is therefore mostly a question of what the elements cost, whether they are standard shapes, and how easy the back wall is to get at.
This comparison ranks four brands common in Australian kitchens: Westinghouse (sharing the Electrolux platform with Chef and Simpson), Omega (sharing with Euromaid), Smeg and Bosch. The prices are ranges from the oven parts we currently stock; the verdicts are about repair cost and ease, not cooking performance or how often the ovens fail.
Cheapest oven to repair: the four brands compared
Codes are listed as they appear on the display. Where two generations of the platform use different codes for the same fault, both are shown. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering a part.
| Brand | Parts availability in Australia | Typical price of the part that fails most | Second most common repair | DIY difficulty | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Westinghouse (Chef, Simpson, Electrolux) | Very wide: elements, fan motors, thermostats, seals, lamps, knobs for models back decades | Fan-forced or bake element $30 to $58 | Fan motor $35 to $43; thermostat and sensor parts widely available | Easy: element is a 30-minute job with the racks out | Cheapest to repair. Decades of shared platform and the most oven parts of any brand — fit the Chef Westinghouse Simpson Oven Element 2000W Late Model 0330 |
| Omega (Euromaid) | Good: elements, fan motors, knobs, seals | Element $26 to $38 | Fan motor $33 to $38 | Easy | Second cheapest. Cheap standard elements on a shared platform |
| Smeg | Good for elements and fan motors; specialised for control parts | Element $26 to $40 | Fan motor $33 to $38 | Easy for elements; harder for door and control parts | Elements are standard shapes and cheap; the premium shows in door glass and controls, not in the repairs owners usually do |
| Bosch | Very good for current series | Element and fan motor at the higher end | Door seals, lamps and sensors mid to high | Moderate | Well supported and the most expensive of the four per part |
| What fails, all brands | From our oven guides | Heating element: the majority of oven repairs | Fan motor, thermostat or sensor, door seal, lamp | Element, lamp and seal are DIY; isolate at the switchboard first | Buy on element price and access |
Why the element decides it
An oven element is a resistance wire in a metal sheath, and it fails the same way on every brand: it burns through, sometimes with a visible blister or a small hole, and that mode stops heating. Replacing it is a thirty-minute job: isolate the oven at the switchboard, pull the racks and the back cover, undo two or three screws, transfer the wires one at a time and refit. On a Westinghouse the fan-forced element is $30 to $58 and fits a run of models decades long; on Omega and Smeg the same standard shapes are $26 to $40. Bosch elements cost more.
Where Westinghouse wins
Westinghouse, Chef, Simpson and Electrolux ovens have shared components for a very long time, and the result is the widest range of oven parts in Australia at prices set by volume. A fan motor or element for a twenty-year-old Chef is a stock item. That depth is why the platform is the cheapest to keep cooking.
Smeg and Bosch
Smeg has a reputation for expensive repairs that the parts do not support: its elements and fan motors are standard shapes at ordinary prices. The premium appears in door glass, hinges and control modules, which are not the repairs most owners do. Bosch ovens are well supported and the E-codes on the display name the part, but the parts themselves sit at the top of the range.
What this does not tell you
This compares the cost and ease of the repairs ovens actually need. It does not compare cooking performance, energy use or how often each brand fails. Every oven repair starts at the switchboard, not the wall switch.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.

Frequently asked questions
Which oven brand is cheapest to repair in Australia?
Westinghouse, with Chef, Simpson and Electrolux on the same platform: elements $30 to $58, fan motors $35 to $43, and the widest oven parts range in the country.
Are Smeg ovens expensive to repair?
Not for the common repairs. Smeg elements are standard shapes at $26 to $40 and fan motors $33 to $38; the premium is in door and control parts.
Can I replace an oven element myself?
Yes, on every brand here, as long as the oven is isolated at the switchboard first. It is a thirty-minute job with the racks and back cover out.
How were these repair costs worked out?
From the oven parts we stock and ship in Australia: the price range of each brand’s common failure parts, how many of those parts exist for each brand, and how often each part category is bought across the year (published in our Australian Appliance Failure Index). Labour is not included; the comparison is about parts cost and how easy the repair is to do at home.
Does cheapest to repair mean most reliable?
No. This compares what it costs and how hard it is to fix the machine when it does fail. A brand can be inexpensive to repair and still fail often, or expensive to repair and rarely need it.
Are the prices here exact?
They are ranges from the parts currently listed, rounded, and they move with stock and exchange rates. Click through to the part for today’s price.
Should I repair or replace?
If the part is in the ranges here and the machine is under about ten years old, repair almost always wins: the median parts bill for a repair in Australia is around forty dollars against several hundred for a replacement plus delivery and disposal.
