Quick answer: Stirling (ALDI) and Esatto are the cheapest heat pump dryers to repair in Australia: they share a platform whose drum belt is about $12 to $35, bearing kit about $30 to $40 and door lock $35 to $45. Fisher & Paykel and Haier heat pump dryers cost more per part (belts $24 to $90, condensate pumps $90 to $100) but have the deepest parts support and the best documentation. Bosch heat pump dryers are well supported but sit at the top on price. Belts and condensate pumps are the two repairs heat pump owners actually do.
Every brand’s error codes in one index · Find your exact part

Heat pump dryers are cheap to run and, for most of their life, cheap to own; the question is what happens when one fails. They add a sealed refrigerant circuit, which is not repairable at home, but the parts that actually fail are the same ones a conventional dryer has: the drive belt, the condensate drain pump, the door lock and the drum bearings. In our Australian Appliance Failure Index the belt is four in ten dryer repairs and the drain pump one in five.
This comparison ranks the heat pump dryers Australians buy most: Stirling (ALDI) and Esatto, which share a Midea-built platform, Fisher & Paykel and Haier, which share theirs, and Bosch. The prices are ranges from the parts we currently stock; the verdicts are about repair cost and ease, not drying performance or energy use.
Cheapest heat pump dryer to repair: the brands compared
Codes are listed as they appear on the display. Where two generations of the platform use different codes for the same fault, both are shown. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering a part.
| Brand | Parts availability in Australia | Typical price of the part that fails most | Second most common repair | DIY difficulty | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Stirling (ALDI) SHPD80W and STR-HPD models | Good for the current heat pump models: belt, bearing kit, door lock, filters | Drum belt $12 to $35 | Bearing kit $35 to $45; door lock $35 to $45 | Moderate: the front comes off for the belt | Cheapest to repair. Shared platform, cheap parts, and the belt is the failure you will meet — fit the Haier Heat Pump Dryer Belt HDHP80AW1 HDHP80E1 HDHP90AN1 HDHP90ANB1 |
| Esatto EHPD models | Good: belt, bearing kit, door lock, filters | Drum belt $12 to $25 | Bearing kit $28 to $35; door lock $35 to $45 | Moderate | Equal cheapest with Stirling; same platform, same parts |
| Fisher & Paykel DH and Haier HDHP models | Very good: belts, condensate pumps, sensors, door parts, capacitors | Drum belt $24 to $90 | Condensate pump $90 to $100; capacitor $18 to $33 | Moderate to hard: the pump and belt both need the machine open | More expensive per part, but the deepest support and every fault code documented |
| Bosch WTW and WQG models | Good for current series | Drum belt about $25 to $30 | Door seal $120 to $134; pump and sensor assemblies at the higher end | Moderate to hard | Well supported but the most expensive parts of the group |
| Solt GGSHPD models | Fair | Drum belt about $12 to $25 | Door lock $35 to $45 | Moderate | Same Midea platform as Stirling and Esatto with a thinner listing |
| What fails, all brands | From the Failure Index | Drive belt: 40 per cent of dryer part purchases | Drain pump 20 per cent; bearings 7 per cent | Belt and pump are DIY; the refrigerant circuit is not | Buy on belt and condensate pump price |
Belts and pumps, not compressors
Owners worry about the heat pump itself, but in practice it rarely fails within the life of the machine and is not repairable at home when it does. What fails is the belt, which stretches and snaps after years of tension, and the condensate pump, which sits in the base collecting lint until it jams. Both are inexpensive on the Midea platform under Stirling, Esatto and Solt, and dearer but well supported on Fisher & Paykel, Haier and Bosch.
Why the ALDI and Esatto dryers are cheapest
Stirling and Esatto heat pump dryers are the same machine from the same factory, and their parts are standard Midea items made in volume: a belt for the price of a sandwich, a bearing kit and door lock around $30 to $40. The caveat is that some ALDI models were sold for one season, and parts for those are thinner; the current SHPD80W platform is well covered.
Fisher & Paykel, Haier and Bosch
Fisher & Paykel and Haier heat pump dryers cost more to repair per part, with belts $24 to $90 and condensate pumps $90 to $100, but they have the deepest parts range and the best documentation of any heat pump dryer sold here, so a fault is diagnosed and fixed rather than guessed at. Bosch is well supported too, at the top of the price range.
What this does not tell you
This compares the cost and ease of the repairs heat pump dryers actually need. It does not compare drying time, energy use or how often each brand fails, and it does not cover the sealed refrigerant circuit, which is a service repair on every brand.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.

Frequently asked questions
Which heat pump dryer is cheapest to repair in Australia?
Stirling (ALDI) and Esatto, which share a Midea platform: belts $12 to $35, bearing kits and door locks around $30 to $40.
Are Fisher & Paykel heat pump dryers expensive to repair?
More expensive per part, with belts $24 to $90 and condensate pumps $90 to $100, but with the deepest parts support and documentation.
Can I repair the heat pump itself?
No. The refrigerant circuit is sealed and is a service repair on every brand. The parts that actually fail, the belt and the condensate pump, are DIY.
How were these repair costs worked out?
From the heat pump dryer parts we stock and ship in Australia: the price range of each brand’s common failure parts, how many of those parts exist for each brand, and how often each part category is bought across the year (published in our Australian Appliance Failure Index). Labour is not included; the comparison is about parts cost and how easy the repair is to do at home.
Does cheapest to repair mean most reliable?
No. This compares what it costs and how hard it is to fix the machine when it does fail. A brand can be inexpensive to repair and still fail often, or expensive to repair and rarely need it.
Are the prices here exact?
They are ranges from the parts currently listed, rounded, and they move with stock and exchange rates. Click through to the part for today’s price.
Should I repair or replace?
If the part is in the ranges here and the machine is under about ten years old, repair almost always wins: the median parts bill for a repair in Australia is around forty dollars against several hundred for a replacement plus delivery and disposal.
