Quick answer: Miele dryers show a mix of plain-text messages and F-codes. The messages are maintenance prompts you fix yourself: Clean out filters, Clean out airways, Empty out container and Check drain hose. The F-codes point at a part: F41 (memory fault), F50 (electronics), F53 (motor speed sensor) and F55 (maximum drying time exceeded, almost always blocked airflow). Clean the filters and the heat exchanger first; a code that returns needs the part in the table.

Miele tumble dryers, whether vented, condenser or heat pump, are unusually honest about what has gone wrong. Most of what shows on the display is not an error code at all but a maintenance message: the fluff filters are clogged, the airways behind them are blocked, the water container is full, or the drain hose is not draining. Fix the message and the dryer carries on. The F-codes are rarer, and most of them come down to airflow, the motor’s speed sensor or the electronic unit.
This guide covers the T-series and T1 dryers sold in Australia, including the TDB, TCB, TCD, TEB, TED, TWB, TWD and TWF heat pump models and the older T 4000 to T 8000 vented and condenser machines. For each message and code you get the plain meaning, the likely cause and the fix. The single most useful thing to know about a Miele dryer is that almost every fault traces back to lint: in the filters, in the airways, on the heat exchanger or in the condensate pump.
Miele dryer error codes: quick-reference table
Codes are listed as they appear on the display. Where two generations of the platform use different codes for the same fault, both are shown. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering a part.
| Code | What it means | Most likely cause | What to do / the part |
|---|---|---|---|
Clean out filters | The fluff filters in the door and door opening are clogged | Lint build-up, usually after several loads without cleaning | Remove both fluff filters, rinse under a tap, dry and refit; on heat pump models also clean the plinth filter — fit the Omega and Euromaid Dryer Heat Restore Kit OCD40WA DM4KG ED45KG (Element, Capacitor, Belt, |
| Clean out airways / Check airways | Air cannot move freely through the dryer | Lint behind the filters, in the air duct or on the heat exchanger; a blocked vent hose on vented models | Vacuum the filter housing and duct; clean the heat exchanger fins; straighten or clear the vent hose |
| Empty out container | The condensate container is full | Normal on condenser and heat pump models; container not emptied | Empty the container and push it fully home; if it fills too fast the drain hose option is worth fitting |
| Check drain hose / Empty container (with hose fitted) | Condensate is not draining through the external hose | Hose kinked, too high, or the condensate pump blocked with lint | Straighten the hose and keep the outlet under one metre high; clean lint from the condensate pump |
Drum does not turn, motor runs | Drive belt broken or slipped | Belt worn through after years of use, tensioner seized | Replace the drive belt and check the tensioner turns freely — fit the Westinghouse & Electrolux Dryer Belt, Idler Pulley & Rear Drum Bearing Kit — Drum Belt + P |
| F41 | EEPROM (memory) fault | Corrupt data on the electronic unit | Power off at the wall for a minute; a repeat means the electronic unit needs reprogramming or replacement |
| F50 | General electronics fault, often shown when the door is opened | Electronic unit glitch or fault | Switch off, wait, switch on; if it returns it is a board repair |
| F53 | Speed sensor (tacho) fault | Sensor on the motor loose, dirty or failed | Reseat or replace the speed sensor on the motor |
| F55 | Maximum drying time (180 minutes) exceeded | Laundry still wet at the time limit: blocked airflow, saturated filters, heat exchanger clogged, heating fault | Clean every filter and the heat exchanger; on vented models clear the vent hose; if airflow is clear, the heating or the moisture sensing needs service |
| Technical fault F-number (other) | An electronics or heat pump fault not documented for the owner | Module, sensor or heat pump circuit | Note the number, power-cycle once, then book service if it returns |
Dries slowly, no code | Restricted airflow or a worn belt slipping on the drum | Lint, vent hose, belt | Clean filters and airways; replace a glazed or stretched belt — fit the Simpson Dryer Belt, Idler Pulley & Rear Drum Bearing Kit — Drum Belt + Pulley + Bearing (3 |
| Won’t start, display on | Door not latched or the door switch failed | Door catch worn, switch failed | Close the door firmly; replace the door catch or switch if the light stays off |
Why almost every Miele dryer fault is airflow
A dryer works by moving warm air through wet laundry and out again, and a Miele monitors that airflow closely. When lint restricts it, the machine first asks you to clean the filters, then the airways, and if the load is still wet at the 180-minute limit it stops with F55. Owners read F55 as an electronics fault; it is not. It is the dryer saying the air could not do its job. Clean the two door filters, vacuum the housing behind them, pull and clean the plinth filter on heat pump models, and brush the heat exchanger fins. Then run a load. F55 disappears in most homes at that point.
Drum not turning: the belt
If the motor runs but the drum stays still, the drive belt has broken or slipped off the motor pulley. On Miele dryers the belt is long-lived but it does eventually wear through, and the symptom is unmistakable: warm air, motor noise, no tumbling. The replacement is a front-panel job on most models, and while the belt is off it is worth checking the tensioner turns freely and the drum rollers are not flat-spotted.
Condensate: container, hose and pump
Condenser and heat pump dryers collect the water they remove, and three messages cover that system. Empty out container means exactly that. If the container fills faster than it should, or the message appears with the container empty, the float in the container or the level sensing is at fault. Check drain hose appears when an external drain is fitted and the water is not getting away; the hose has kinked or risen too high, or lint has reached the condensate pump. Cleaning the pump chamber clears it; a pump that hums without pumping is replaced.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset a Miele dryer?
Switch it off at its own button, turn it off at the wall for one minute, then restart. Maintenance messages such as Clean out filters clear once the filters are clean and the program is restarted.
What does F55 mean on a Miele dryer?
The load was still wet at the 180-minute limit. In almost every case it is airflow: clean the door filters, the plinth filter, the airways and the heat exchanger, and clear the vent hose on vented models.
Why does my Miele dryer say Clean out airways when the filters are clean?
The blockage is behind the filters: lint in the filter housing, the air duct or on the heat exchanger. Vacuum the housing and clean the heat exchanger fins with a soft brush.
My Miele dryer runs but the drum does not turn. What is it?
The drive belt has broken or come off. Replace the belt and check the tensioner moves freely.
What is F53 on a Miele dryer?
A speed sensor fault on the motor. The sensor can work loose; reseating it fixes many cases, otherwise it is replaced.
Where is the model number on a Miele dryer?
Open the door and look at the sticker on the door rim or frame; the model is a T-number such as TWD440WP or T 8823 C. Use it to match parts or run it through our Part Finder.
Read the code, then fit the part
Clean the filters and the airways first; most Miele dryer messages end there. If a code stays, the table names the part. Find your Miele part now
