Quick answer: The LG IE error code (Inlet Error — also shown as 1E on some displays) means the machine has not filled with water within the allowed time. The tap is off or barely open in most cases. If the tap is open and the hose is clear, clean the inlet filter screen first — it’s free and takes two minutes. If flow is still too slow, the inlet valve solenoid has likely failed. A replacement LG inlet valve costs $37–$59.

What the LG IE code means
IE stands for Inlet Error. LG front-load and top-load washing machines open the water inlet valve at the start of a cycle and monitor how quickly the water level rises via the pressure switch. If the machine has not reached the minimum fill level within approximately four minutes, it stops and displays IE.
Some LG models display this fault as 1E (the numeral 1 rather than the letter I) — the meaning and fix are identical. It is one of the most common LG error codes and is almost always caused by something simple outside the machine.
Common causes of LG IE
| Cause | Likelihood | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cold water tap turned off or barely open | Very common | Open the tap fully — free |
| Fill hose kinked or crushed | Common | Reposition hose — free |
| Inlet filter screen blocked with sediment | Common | Remove and rinse — free |
| Low mains water pressure | Moderate | Check other taps; contact water authority if house-wide |
| Faulty solenoid inlet valve | Moderate | Replace valve — $37–$59 |
| Faulty pressure switch (thinks it’s full when it’s not) | Less common | Replace pressure switch — $29–$36 |
How to fix the LG IE error — step by step
- Open the cold water tap fully. It must be turned counter-clockwise as far as it will go. Even a half-open tap can cause IE in the warmer months when mains pressure drops.
- Check the hose. Pull the machine out and inspect the fill hose for any kinks or bends tighter than a loose curve. Straighten and push the machine back without re-kinking.
- Clean the inlet filter. Turn off the tap. Unscrew the fill hose from the back of the machine. You will see a small mesh filter screen inside the inlet port — pull it out with needle-nose pliers, rinse under running water and refit. Reconnect the hose and restore the tap.
- Test a tap elsewhere in the house. If other cold taps run at low pressure, the issue is mains supply rather than the machine.
- Test the inlet valve. If all the above check out, disconnect the power and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across each solenoid coil on the valve. A good coil reads somewhere in the range of 200–1,500 Ω depending on voltage (12 V or 24 V coils are used on different LG models). An open circuit (OL) means the coil has burned out — replace the valve.
Tip: LG top-loaders typically use a 2-way or 3-way inlet valve (one outlet for cold fill, one for pre-wash, one for the softener). When you order a replacement, confirm how many outlets your existing valve has — this is visible once you pull the machine out.

How to replace an LG washing machine inlet valve (about 20 minutes)
- Unplug the machine and turn off the water tap.
- Disconnect the fill hose from the inlet port — have a towel ready for drips.
- Remove the rear or top panel to access the valve inside the machine.
- Photograph the wiring on all solenoid connectors before disconnecting.
- Unplug the solenoid wiring connectors and remove the mounting screws.
- Disconnect the internal hose from the valve outlet (clip or jubilee clamp).
- Fit the new valve, reconnect internal hose, wiring and external fill hose.
- Restore power and run a short cycle — watch for leaks at the fill hose connection.
Frequently asked questions
My LG shows IE but the tap is definitely open — what else should I check?
Clean the mesh filter screen inside the inlet port — this is the most commonly overlooked cause. A blocked screen can cut flow to almost nothing even with the tap fully open.
Is LG IE the same as 1E?
Yes. The digit “1” and the letter “I” look identical on a 7-segment LED display. Both mean Inlet Error; the fix is the same.
My LG top-loader fills very slowly but doesn’t show IE — could the valve still be the cause?
Yes — a partially failed solenoid or a clogged valve outlet can reduce flow without fully triggering the error. Clean the filter and test the valve resistance; partial clogging of the valve inlet strainer is common.
Can a faulty pressure switch cause IE?
In theory, yes — if the pressure switch falsely reports the machine is full when it is empty, the machine won’t open the valve. This is less common than a valve or tap issue.
Where is the model number on my LG washing machine?
On a front loader it is on the inside of the door frame. On a top loader it is inside the lid or on the rear panel.
