Quick answer: Smeg dishwashers use E-codes. E1 is the anti-flood system (water in the base), E2 an overfill or water level fault, E3 water not heating, E4 the temperature sensor, E5 and E6 level and turbidity control faults, E7 the flow meter, E8 the alternating spray arm and E9 the water inlet. Clear the base, clean the filters and check the tap first; a code that returns points at the part named below.

A Smeg dishwasher stops and flashes an E-code when one of its checks fails, and the code names the system: water coming in, water going out, heating, level sensing or the spray arm diverter. Knowing which is which turns a mystery into a ten-minute check, because the most common Smeg codes come from a blocked filter, a kinked hose or a tap that was not fully open.
This guide covers the E1 to E9 code family used on Smeg’s freestanding, built-in and fully integrated dishwashers sold in Australia, including the DWA, DWAI, DWAU, DWAFI, STA, STL, ST and DI ranges. For each code you get the plain meaning, the likely cause and the fix, then the parts we stock. Smeg dishwashers are well worth repairing: the tubs are stainless, the platforms are shared across many years, and the parts that fail are inexpensive.
Smeg dishwasher error codes: quick-reference table
Codes are listed as they appear on the display or as the flashing-light sequence the manual decodes. Some models show only a subset. Always confirm against your model’s manual before ordering a part.
| Code | What it means | Most likely cause | What to do / the part |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | Anti-flood (Aquastop) system activated: water in the base | Leak from the door seal, a hose connection, the sump or an overfill | Unplug, tilt the machine to empty the base, find and fix the leak; the float will keep tripping until the base is dry |
E2 | Water level too high / overfill safety | Inlet valve not closing, level sensor or pressure switch fault, foam from the wrong detergent | Turn off the tap; if the machine keeps filling when off, replace the inlet valve; otherwise check the level sensor — fit the Dishwasher Aquastop Water Inlet Hose Smeg Omega DWA Series 0331 |
E3 | Water not heating: temperature not reached in time | Heating element failed, thermostat or sensor, heater relay | Check the element for continuity and replace it; if the element is fine, the temperature sensor is next — fit the Smeg Dishwasher Heating Element DWA147X, DWA149S, DWA149W, DWAFI152T |
| E4 | Temperature sensor (NTC) fault | Sensor open or short circuit, damaged wiring | Replace the temperature sensor |
| E5 | Water level control fault | Pressure switch or level sensor not reading, blocked pressure chamber | Clean the sump and pressure chamber; replace the pressure switch if it still faults |
| E6 | Turbidity sensor fault | Sensor dirty or failed | Clean the sensor window in the sump; replace if the code returns |
E7 | Flow meter fault: wrong quantity of water | Blocked inlet screen, low pressure, flow meter not counting | Clean the inlet screen; check the tap pressure; replace the flow meter if it no longer counts — fit the Midea IAG Technica Delongh SMEG Whirlpool Dishwasher Inlet Valve |
| E8 | Alternating spray arm (diverter) fault | Diverter motor or position sensor, debris jamming the diverter | Clear debris from the sump; a diverter that cannot find position is replaced as a unit |
| E9 | Water inlet fault: no water in the allowed time | Tap off, hose kinked, inlet screen blocked, inlet valve failed | Open the tap fully, straighten the hose, clean the screen; replace the inlet valve if it still will not fill |
| Water not draining, no code | Blocked filter, drain hose or drain pump | Food debris, glass in the impeller, hose kinked | Clean the filter and pump impeller; straighten the hose; replace the drain pump if it hums without pumping |
Which Smeg dishwasher codes clear with a reset?
Hold the program button (or the on/off button, depending on the model) for a few seconds to cancel the program, then turn the machine off at the wall for one minute. E9 clears once the tap is on and the hose is straight. E3 clears if the cause was a one-off. E1 will not clear until the base is dry, and E4, E7 and E8 come straight back if the part behind them has failed. A code that returns at the same point in the cycle is a diagnosis.
E1 and E9: the two you can usually fix yourself
E1 is the anti-flood float in the base, and it only trips because water got there. Unplug the machine, pull it out, and tilt it backwards over a towel to empty the base. Then look for the source: a door seal with a split at the bottom corners, a loose inlet hose connection, or a sump seal that has hardened. Fix that and the code goes away for good. E9 is the opposite problem, no water arriving: the tap, the hose and the little screen in the hose end account for nearly all of them, and the inlet valve is the part when those are clear.
E3 and E4: cold dishes
Dishes coming out cold and wet with E3 on the display means the water never reached temperature. On most Smeg models the heater is a flow-through element on the circulation pump; it is tested for continuity with a multimeter and replaced as an assembly when it reads open. E4 is the temperature sensor itself. If E3 appears and the element tests fine, the sensor is the likely cause, because the control board cannot heat to a target it cannot read.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset a Smeg dishwasher error code?
Cancel the program by holding the program or on/off button for a few seconds, turn the machine off at the wall for one minute, then restart. If the code returns at the same step, the fault is real and needs the check or part in the table.
What does E1 mean on a Smeg dishwasher?
E1 is the anti-flood system: water has collected in the base. Unplug the machine, empty the base by tilting it, then find the leak, usually the door seal, an inlet connection or the sump seal.
What is E9 on a Smeg dishwasher?
No water arrived in the allowed time. Check the tap is fully open, the inlet hose is straight and its screen is clean; if it still will not fill, replace the inlet valve.
My Smeg dishwasher shows E3 and the dishes are cold. Which part?
E3 is a heating fault. Test the heating element for continuity and replace it if it reads open; if the element is fine, replace the temperature sensor.
What does E8 mean on a Smeg dishwasher?
The alternating spray arm diverter could not reach its position. Clear debris from the sump; if the code returns the diverter unit is replaced.
Where is the model number on a Smeg dishwasher?
Open the door and look at the sticker on the edge of the door or the side of the tub; the model reads like DWA6315X or STA6539L. Use it to match parts or run it through our Part Finder.
Read the code, then fit the part
Empty the base, clean the filters, open the tap, then read the code again. If it stays, the part is in the table. Find your Smeg part now
