Quick answer: On a Simpson 39S500M, 39S600M or 39P400M dryer, the faults that stop the drum or make it noisy come down to a few wear parts: the 1930 mm drum belt, the idler (tension) pulley, the rear drum bearing, the 8 uF run capacitor and the door catch. Squealing, rumbling or a drum that slips under load points to the belt, pulley and bearing, replaced together as one repair kit because they wear each other out. Which Simpson dryer do you have?
Check the model sticker, usually just inside the door opening or on the back panel. This guide is written around the 39S500M and 39S600M; the 39P400M shares the same belt, pulley, bearing, capacitor, door catch and wall bracket kit, and the later SDV401, SDV501 and SDV601 are listed on the three-part kit and the door catch. If the sticker says 39P500M, the door catch, capacitor, bearing-and-support and wall bracket kit listings below cover it, but the kit’s list does not; send us the model number and we’ll check.

The drum-noise trio: belt, idler pulley and rear drum bearing
These three wear as a set. The belt runs around the drum, under the idler pulley and over the motor shaft, and the back of the drum rides on the small rear bearing. Once one is tired it takes the others with it:
- A stiff or notchy idler pulley drags on a new belt, which squeals within weeks and glazes.
- A rough rear bearing lets the drum drop and wobble, so the belt runs off line, stretches and slips.
- All three are within reach once the cabinet is open; do one and you will be back for the others within months.

Pros and cons of the kit
- Pro: it matches the models listed on the kit page, the parts are the same numbers we sell singly, and it is one delivery.
- Con: if you replaced the bearing recently and only the belt is slipping, the idler pulley and drum belt pair or the belt alone is the right buy.
- Con: it will not fix a hum with no turn (capacitor) or a door that pops open (catch); diagnose first.
Rear drum bearing: on its own or with the support?
On a dryer that has only just started to rumble, the rear bearing alone is usually enough. Once the drum is out, look at the rear support the bearing mounts to. If it is scored or grooved, a fresh bearing on it will not last; order the bearing-and-support product in the table instead (SDV401, SDV501 and SDV601 owners have their own bearing and support listing). Run capacitor: motor hums, drum does not turn
The 8 uF run capacitor gives the motor its starting kick. When it drops in value the motor hums and cuts out on its thermal protector after a few seconds. If the drum turns by hand with normal drag and no squeal or scrape, the capacitor is the likely cause rather than the belt or bearing. The 2-pin capacitor in the table is listed for the 39P400M, 39P500M, 39P600M, 39S500M and 39S600M. Unplug the dryer and give the capacitor a minute before touching its terminals. Door catch: door pops open or will not stay shut
When the striker on the door catch wears, the door drifts open on the vibration of a full load, the door switch opens and the dryer stops mid-cycle; owners often assume the machine is faulty when it is only the catch. If the door needs a firm push to click home, the door catch in the table is a screwdriver job and is listed for the 39P400M, 39P500M, 39S500M, 39S600M, SDV401, SDV501 and SDV601. How to confirm the fault before buying anything
- Unplug the dryer at the wall.
- Open the door and turn the drum by hand. Free-spinning with no resistance: belt off or broken. Rumble, grind or scrape from the back: rear bearing, possibly the support. Chirp from underneath: idler pulley.
- Lift the front of the drum: play or a clunk points to the rear bearing.
- Plug back in, close the door and start it. Hum with no drum movement, cutting out after a few seconds: capacitor. Squeal on start that quietens after a few minutes: idler pulley. Squeal or rumble that follows the load and never quietens: bearing.
- Door pops open mid-cycle: catch.
Any mix of squeal, chirp and rumble on a dryer a few years old: the three-part kit, rather than chasing one part at a time.
What the job involves
Belt, pulley and bearing together is about an hour for a first-timer with the front and top panels off. Unplug first, photograph the belt route before you disturb it, and note which way the idler arm sits. The rear bearing is reached with the drum out; the pulley and belt go on as the drum goes back in. It is basic hand tools and patience rather than a socket set. My 39S600M hums but the drum won’t turn. Belt or capacitor?
Unplug it and turn the drum by hand. Normal drag with no scrape or grind: the 8 uF run capacitor is the likely cause. No resistance at all: the belt is off or broken, so check the idler pulley and rear bearing while you are in there.
Do I need the bearing and support, or just the bearing?
Start with the bearing on its own (it is in the kit). If the rear support it mounts to is grooved or worn once the drum is out, fit the bearing and support instead; a new bearing on a worn support will not last.
Do the same parts fit Westinghouse and Electrolux dryers?
The 0542377026 rear bearing and the 8 uF run capacitor are shared across many Simpson, Westinghouse and Electrolux models, and the kit lists EDV, EDE and LD models alongside the Simpson codes. Fitment is by model number, not badge: check the sticker.
