Belt, idler pulley and rear drum bearing: why they come as a kit
These three parts share one job — turning the drum smoothly — and they wear as a group. The belt runs from the motor around the drum and back over the idler pulley. When the pulley stiffens, a brand-new belt run over it squeals within weeks and glazes its ribs. A rough rear bearing lets the drum ride unevenly, and the belt stretches and slips trying to keep up. Fit a new belt on its own and you can be back inside the cabinet a month later.
The Westinghouse and Electrolux dryer belt, pulley and bearing kit packages the belt, idler pulley and rear drum bearing, priced $10 below buying the three parts separately. All three are reachable once the front or top panel is off, so it is one strip-down rather than three. Allow about an hour with basic hand tools: unplug the dryer, lift it off the wall, photograph the belt route, fit the pulley and belt, and replace the rear bearing while the drum is out.
If the pulley is quiet and the belt has simply snapped, a belt on its own is a reasonable call. Pros and cons of the kit
- Pro: one strip-down, matched parts, and no second order when the pulley turns out to be the real culprit.
- Con: the kit includes the bearing only, not the support it sits in — a scored or cracked support needs the bearing-and-support listing (next section).
- Con: if your only fault is a dead switch or a tired capacitor, none of these three parts will help.

Rear drum bearing and support
The rear bearing sits in a support behind the drum. On a dryer that has rumbled for years, the bearing wears into that support, and a new bearing on a worn support will still let the drum sit low and rub. If the support is scored or grooved, or the drum still rubs after a new bearing, order the bearing-and-support listing for your model from the table. Run capacitor: motor hums but the drum will not start
The motor relies on a run capacitor to get turning. When it weakens, the classic symptom is a hum from the motor with the drum stationary — open the door, give the drum a shove, shut it again, and the dryer runs. A snapped belt behaves differently: the drum spins freely by hand while the motor whirrs.
The 8 uF two-pin run capacitor in the table is listed across Simpson, Westinghouse and Electrolux vented dryers; check your model against the listing before ordering. Replacing it is a two-wire swap once you are inside the cabinet — unplug the dryer first and let it sit a few minutes, because a capacitor holds a charge. Still unsure? On/off switch and door micro switch
On/off push switch. When the push-button power switch fails the dryer is completely dead — no drum light, no motor — or the button has to be held in. The Electrolux switch in the table is listed for EDV505, EDV605, EDV5051, EDV605S and EDE605A; the Westinghouse LD504, LD505 and LD605 on/off switch is the same part number listed for Westinghouse.
Door / drum-light micro switch. On the EDV5552 and EDV6552 (and the Simpson SDV401, SDV501 and SDV601) a small microswitch behind the door tells the control the door is shut. When it wears, the dryer refuses to start with the door closed, or stops if the door is nudged, and the drum light may stay on or off when it should not.
Wall mount bracket kit
Brackets go missing when a wall-mounted dryer moves house. The wall mount bracket kit in the table is listed for EDV505, EDV5051, EDV5552 and EDV6051. Fix into studs or masonry, not plasterboard alone, and take the dryer down before any belt, pulley or bearing work — the front panel comes off far more easily on a bench. Confirm the fault before you buy
- Unplug the dryer.
- Turn the drum by hand. Spins freely and the motor runs when switched on: belt. Turns but chirps or catches: idler pulley or rear bearing.
- Run it empty for a minute. A high squeal that changes with drum speed is the idler pulley; a low rumble from the back is the bearing.
- Motor hums, drum stationary, runs after a hand start: capacitor.
- Nothing at all: on/off switch first, then the door micro switch on the EDV5552 and EDV6552.

Almost always the idler pulley or the rear drum bearing. A pulley squeal is high-pitched and changes with the load; a bearing is a lower rumble from the back. Both are in the kit and come out in the same strip-down.
How do I know the run capacitor has failed?
The motor hums but the drum does not move, and the dryer starts if you spin the drum by hand and close the door. Unplug the machine and wait a few minutes before handling the capacitor.
