The door seal (also called the rubber boot) is the flexible rubber ring that seals the gap between your Haier washer’s door and the stainless drum. On a front-loader it cops a hard life. Every wash it flexes, fills with water, traps lint and detergent residue, then sits there damp between cycles. After a few years that brings on the two Haier complaints we hear most: black mould blooming in the folds, and water dribbling from the bottom of the door mid-cycle. How do I know it’s the door seal?

Run through these signs before you buy. The door seal is almost certainly the culprit when:

How to replace the door seal, step by step

Set aside about 45 minutes for your first attempt. It’s a moderate job. No special skills, just patience getting the retaining rings on and off.

Tools you’ll need: a flat-head screwdriver, a pair of long-nose pliers, a torch, and an old towel. Some Haier models use a spring-band clamp, others use a screw-type clamp. Both are handled below.

Safety first:

1. Switch off and unplug the machine at the wall. Do not skip this.
2. Turn off the water taps at the inlet hoses.
3. Lay your towel down to catch the water that always sits in the bottom of the seal.

The replacement:

1. Open the door and pull back the rubber to find the outer retaining clamp where the seal meets the front panel. Locate the spring or screw that tensions it.
2. Release the outer clamp. For a spring band, lever the spring out of its hook with the flat-head screwdriver and ease the band off. For a screw clamp, loosen the screw and lift it away. Note where the clamp’s join sits, because you’ll want the new one in the same orientation.
3. Peel the outer lip of the seal off the front panel rim, working all the way around. Most Haier seals have a small drain or alignment mark that should sit at the bottom, at 6 o’clock. Note its position before removal.
4. Open the door fully and find the inner clamp that holds the seal onto the drum’s front lip. Release it the same way, spring or screw.
5. Pull the old seal off the drum and remove it through the door. Wipe the drum lip and front panel rim clean of old gunk and detergent scale so the new seal beds in evenly.
6. Fit the new OZ-0099 seal. Push the inner lip onto the drum’s front edge first, seating it all the way round with the drain mark at the bottom. Refit the inner clamp.
7. Seat the outer lip onto the front panel rim, again working around evenly. Refit the outer clamp and re-tension the spring or tighten the screw.
8. Check it’s seated flush, with no rubber pinched or twisted and the clamp join sitting where it was originally.
9. Reconnect the water, plug in, and run a short rinse and spin cycle empty to test for leaks before you do a real load.

If the new seal leaks on the first test, the usual cause is the outer lip not fully seated in its channel, or the clamp join not closed properly. Pause the cycle and reseat it.
