The rubber door seal on a Haier front loader (also called the boot or gasket) is the spot that catches black mould and slow leaks more than anywhere else on the machine. It sits at the mouth of the drum and traps a bit of water in its lower fold after every wash. With the door shut it stays warm and dark, which is exactly what mould wants. Most of the time the seal needs a clean, not a new part. The thing is knowing which job you’ve got before you spend money. Why is my Haier washer door seal mouldy or leaking?
Black or grey speckled mould on the seal almost never means a fault. It’s a maintenance issue that comes with how every front loader works. Cold washes, liquid detergent, fabric softener residue and a door that’s kept shut all feed it. It starts in the lower fold of the rubber where water pools, then creeps around the lip.
A leak is different. It has a few possible causes, and only one of them means you need a new seal:
- Trapped grime or a coin in the fold breaks the seal between rubber and glass, so water weeps from the bottom of the door during the wash. That’s cleanable.
- A small object (a bra wire, a hairpin, a coin) has nicked or torn the rubber. A tear that lets water through means the seal is done, so replace it with the genuine gasket.

What are the checks, in order, cheapest first?
Work down this list. Most Haier owners stop at step 2 or 3 and never need a new part.
Run a hot maintenance wash (free).
Empty the drum, add nothing but a cup of white vinegar (or a washing-machine cleaner), and run the hottest, longest cycle your Haier has: 90°C, or “Drum Clean” if it’s fitted. Pull back the lower lip of the rubber and you’ll usually find a slimy pocket of water, hair, lint and the odd coin. Wipe it out. Make a paste of bicarb soda and a little water, or use a 50/50 white vinegar spray, and scrub the mould off the rubber with an old toothbrush or a microfibre cloth. Get right into the fold, because that’s where most of the mould lives. This is the biggest prevention step there is. An open door lets the seal dry out so mould can’t grow back. Wipe the seal dry after the last wash of the day too. If you only change one habit, change this one.Check the seal for a coin, wire or tear (free).
With the seal clean and dry, run a finger right around the inside of the rubber. You’re feeling for a hard object stuck in the fold (pull it out) and for any nick, split or thin worn patch.
