A top loader that bangs the cabinet on spin, walks across the laundry floor, or stops with an unbalanced-load error on every wash has tired suspension rods. The fix is a set of four rods and a screwdriver — one of the most satisfying repairs in the machine.

Step by step
- Confirm the symptom. Push down firmly on one corner of the open tub and let go: a healthy suspension settles in one smooth return, worn rods bounce two or three times. Banging that starts at mid-spin and a machine that shuffles position are the classic signs.
- Unplug the machine and open the top. On this cabinet style the top deck tilts back once its fasteners are released, giving you a clear view down all four corners. Photograph the rod positions before touching anything.
- Note how each rod hangs. Each rod hooks into a socket at the top corner of the cabinet and carries a damper cup at the bottom that cradles the tub. The new rods must sit exactly the same way — top hook orientation and cup seating are the whole job.
- Swap the rods one corner at a time. Lift the tub slightly to take weight off the rod, unhook the top, release the cup from the tub lug, and fit the new rod in the same orientation. Seat the cup fully before moving on — a half-seated cup is the number one cause of a repeat banging call-out. Then the next corner.
- Check all four seats, close up, and test. With all four rods in, press each corner of the tub and feel for the same firm, single-settle response. Refit the top deck and run a short cycle with a small, even load.
Questions along the way
Can I replace just the worst rod?
The four rods share every load and wear together — three tired rods will overwork a single new one and the imbalance returns in months. Kits are sold as fours because that is the repair that holds.
Why does it only bang on spin, not wash?
Wash agitation is slow and the suspension barely works. Spin throws the water out of the load unevenly at speed, and that is when tired dampers let the tub reach the cabinet. If the machine also rumbles, check the guide on drum bearings before ordering.
