What do Samsung fridge error codes mean?
Samsung fridge codes follow a simple pattern once you see it. Codes ending in E are errors, and the number tells you which circuit tripped: single digits are usually sensors, the low twenties are fans, the mid twenties are defrost, and the thirties relate to the ice system. A letter code like OF OF or PC ER is a mode or communication message rather than a component fault.
Behind almost every genuine code is one of four part families:
- Temperature sensors — small thermistors clipped to the evaporator, ducts and compartment walls. When one reads open or short circuit, the board flags it. These are the cheapest fix on the list.
- Fan motors — freezer fan, fridge circulation fan and condenser fan. If a fan does not spin when told to, or spins at the wrong speed, you get a fan code.

OF OF, demo mode and the famous “fault” that is not one
OF OF (some displays show “O FF” or scrolling dashes) is the single most searched Samsung fridge “error”, and it is not an error. It is Cooling Off mode — a showroom setting that lights the display but switches off all cooling so retail floor stock does not run compressors all day.
It gets triggered in real kitchens more often than you would think: a cleaning wipe across the control panel, kids pressing buttons, or a power interruption mid-keypress. The symptom is unmistakable — the lights work, but nothing gets cold and the compressor never runs.
The exit combination varies by model, which is why we will not print one recipe here — on most Australian models it is pressing and holding two specific panel buttons together for around three to five seconds until the temperature display returns, but the correct pair is listed in your model’s manual. How do I reset a Samsung fridge error code?
A reset is always the first move, because Samsung boards latch some codes even after the underlying blip has passed — especially the power-related trio 83E, 85E and 86E after a storm or grid brown-out.
- Switch the fridge off at the wall and unplug it. Not just the display — the plug out of the socket.
- Wait at least 60 seconds. Two to three minutes is better; it lets the boards fully discharge and the compressor pressures equalise.
- Plug back in and switch on. Give it 10 minutes and check the display.
If the code stays away, it was a transient fault and you are done. If the same code returns within hours or days, a real component is out of range, and resetting again just silences the messenger. That is when the matrix above earns its keep.
Never reset repeatedly to “live with” a defrost or fan code. An iced evaporator works the compressor harder every day it runs, and a $30 heater left unfixed can become a spoiled-food, dead-compressor problem.

A note on fan codes: before buying a motor, defrost the machine fully (24 hours, doors open, towels down). A large share of 21E and 40E codes are just fans locked in ice because defrost failed first — in which case the defrost heater or bi-metal thermostat is the real culprit and the fan is an innocent bystander.
Which codes need a technician, not a part?
Be honest with yourself about three of the rows above.
84C (compressor lock) and repeat 83E/85E/86E faults live in inverter-compressor territory. If a power cycle does not clear them, the fault is the inverter board or the compressor itself. Compressor and refrigerant work in Australia must be done by a technician holding an ARCTick refrigerant-handling licence — this is not a DIY line, it is the law, and it exists because refrigerant work done badly is dangerous and wrecks the machine.
PC ER sits in between. For everything else — sensors, fan motors, defrost heaters — the safety rule is the same one that applies to any mains appliance: unplug the fridge at the wall before removing any panel, and only proceed if you are a competent person comfortable disconnecting and reconnecting wiring. Defrost heaters are mains-voltage parts. Why do error codes appear after a blackout?
