GF, GB, GN, GS: what the LG model prefix tells you
The first two letters of an LG model number describe the cabinet, and that alone narrows the part list:
- GF is French door (two fridge doors over a freezer drawer): GF-B530BL, GF-V570MBLC.
- GB is bottom mount (one fridge door over a freezer door): GB-335PL.
- GN is top mount (freezer on top): GN-422FW.
- GS is side by side: GS-L635PL.
- GT and GR are top-mount and older numbers, still worth fixing.
The letters after the numbers (BL, PL, WL, MBL) are mostly finish, but one finish can carry a different fan or shroud, so quote the whole string. Every LG model we list sits under LG models, and the LG parts range holds the lot by part type.
Evaporator (freezer) fan motors: the part that fails most
The evaporator fan sits behind the removable back panel inside the freezer and pushes air over the coil, then up a duct into the fridge. When it slows, the freezer stays cold because it is sitting on the coil, but the fridge starves. Ice on the blades is the scrape; a worn bearing is the buzz. The fan does not fix itself, though it will sometimes go quiet for a day just to give you hope.

Before ordering, unplug the fridge, empty the freezer and take the back panel off. Heavy ice around the fan and coil means the defrost side is the problem and a new fan will ice up again in a fortnight; a clean coil with a seized or noisy fan means the motor. Condenser fan, defrost parts and DC motor assemblies
Condenser fan motor. Bottom rear beside the compressor, behind the cover. When it stops, the compressor runs hot and long, both compartments drift warm and newer models throw Er CF. Unplug, remove the cover and spin the blade by hand: stiff or wobbly means the motor.
Defrost termination thermostat. A clip-on disc on the evaporator that tells the board the coil is clear. When it fails open the heater never runs, ice grows week by week, airflow chokes and you get the warm fridge with an iced-up freezer wall. DC motor assemblies. LG lists some fan and damper drives as a plain DC motor assembly. Where the LG model sticker is and how to match it
Open the fridge door and look at the inside left wall, around the top crisper. The sticker carries the word Model followed by a string starting GF-, GB-, GN-, GS-, GT- or GR-. DIY or repairer?
Fan motors and the defrost thermostat are jobs most Australians can do at home: unplug at the wall, thaw the freezer, remove the back panel, unclip the fan, swap the connector. A fan motor is $45–90; a defrost thermostat $10–20. A repairer’s call-out and diagnosis typically runs $100–165 before any part, so a first-time DIY on a fan leaves you well ahead.
Call a repairer when the compressor is silent or clicks and stops (inverter drive or sealed system); when the fan tests fine and the fault is upstream on the board; or when a GS side by side’s water and ice module is in the way. Never run the fridge with the panel off and the blade exposed, and never bypass a door switch to watch the fan.
