Samsung fridges fail in a recognisable order
There’s a sheet of ice on the back wall of the fridge section. The freezer is still rock hard. The milk went off two days early. It’s the classic Samsung complaint, and it comes down to a short list of parts.
Every Samsung cabinet has an evaporator coil behind the back panel, a fan pushing cold air around, and a heater that melts the frost off the coil a few times a day. When that breaks, things fail in the same order: defrost sensor, defrost heater, evaporator fan, then the damper motor on bottom-mounts and French doors, then the temperature sensors.

Defrost sensor and defrost heater: the ice-on-the-back-wall fault
Two parts run the defrost cycle: the defrost sensor, a small thermistor clipped to the coil that tells the board when to start and stop, and the sheathed heater under it. When either dies, the frost stays and becomes a sheet of ice that chokes the airflow. The freezer, sitting on the coil, stays cold. The fridge, fed by air pushed up from the coil, drifts warm. The fridge doesn’t know it’s spring, and the ice behind the back wall certainly doesn’t.
Unplug at the wall, pull the back panel and test. The heater should show continuity on a multimeter; open circuit means it’s finished. The sensor’s resistance should move as you warm it in your hand; a fixed reading means it’s finished. If the heater passes, it’s the sensor, which is the cheaper part anyway. Twin-cooling side-by-sides (the RS family) have an evaporator and heater behind each compartment, so the RS552 and RS554 carry two heater listings: the one in the table and the Samsung Fridge Defrost Heater RS552NRUASL/SA, RS552NRUAWW/SA, RS554NRUASL/SA. Evaporator fan and damper motor: warm fridge, no ice
No ice sheet? Then it’s airflow, not defrost.
Evaporator fan motor. The fan in front of the coil pushes cold air around the cabinet. It usually announces itself: a hum that becomes a grind, then silence. The freezer creeps up and the fridge follows. On the SR341 and SRF886 the Samsung Fridge Motor Fan Assy – Suits SR341MLS SRF886SCLS is the drop-in. Damper motor. On RL and RB bottom-mounts and RF French doors, cold is made in the freezer and metered up through a motorised flap at the top back of the fridge compartment. Stuck shut, the fridge warms, the freezer is perfect and there’s no ice. Stuck open, the crisper freezes the lettuce. Listen for the flap clicking at power-up; silence points at the motor. Temperature sensors and thermostats
Electronic Samsung cabinets read thermistors in the fridge, the freezer and on the coil. If one drifts, the board believes it: the fridge over-cools, the compressor runs a marathon, or you get an error code. Older RT top-mounts and the SR range use a mechanical thermostat behind the dial. When it fails the fridge runs flat out or not at all. The RT part is in the table; the SR cabinets take the Samsung Fridge Thermostat SR281MW SR368NTS SR367NW SR393NTS SR395NTS.

Where the model sticker is on a Samsung fridge, and how to match it
It’s on the left-hand wall inside the fridge compartment, usually at the top or just above the crisper drawers; on a few older top-mounts it’s inside the door. Photograph it; the 30-second Samsung model number guide shows what it looks like.
The prefix is the family: RS side-by-side, RL and RB bottom-mount, RF French door, RT top-mount, SR and SRF the older Australian-market cabinets. The /SA at the end (/XSA on older stock) means sold new in Australia, and two fridges that differ only in that suffix can take different parts, so type the whole thing in, slash included.

DIY or repairer?
Sensors sit in the $15–30 band. Damper motors, fan motors and thermostats are around $35–55. Defrost heaters run $70–90. A repairer’s call-out and diagnosis is typically $100–165 before parts, and on a defrost fault they’ll fit exactly the parts above.
The work is screwdriver-and-multimeter territory: unplug, empty the shelves, unclip the back panel, thaw the ice with a hair dryer and patience, test, swap, refit. Allow an hour plus thaw time. Call a repairer when the compressor runs and nothing gets cold (sealed system), when the fault survives a new sensor and heater (board territory, and it needs proper diagnosis), or when it’s on the water side of a plumbed French door. Know the right part, then decide who fits it.
