
Quick answer: On Westinghouse, Simpson and Electrolux-built washers, E10 means water is not getting in: tap, inlet hose filter, inlet valve, then the water-level sensor. EF0 (a zero, often read as EFO) means water where it should not be: overflow, a leak, a stuck pressure sensor or a pump not clearing. E20 and E21 mean water is not getting out. The Westinghouse has stopped mid-cycle with E10 flashing, or the Simpson is sitting on a full tub showing EF0. Westinghouse, Simpson and Electrolux machines sold in Australia share one control platform, so the codes and the parts are the same.

The 60-second checks before you buy anything
Most E10 and E20 codes are a tap, a hose or a filter. Machine off at the power point, then:
- Tap fully open. A half-open tap times out the fill. Dual-fill machine: check both.
- Inlet hose kink. Pull the machine out and look.
- Inlet hose filter. Tap off, unscrew the hose at the machine end, rinse the mesh screen.
- Pump filter cap. Front loaders: the round cap low on the front. Towel down, turn it out slowly, clear the coins and bobby pins.
- Drain hose. Not kinked, not too deep in the standpipe, outlet no higher than about a metre.
- Power reset. Off at the wall for two minutes, then a rinse-and-spin.
E10: the machine cannot get water in
E10 is a timer. The controller opens the inlet valve, waits for the water-level sensor to report the set level, and stops if it does not see it in time. Suspects, in order: tap, hose, hose filter, inlet valve, level sensor.

Top loaders have separate hot and cold valves, so E10 only on warm or hot cycles points at the hot side: Simpson Westinghouse Washing Machine Inlet Valve Hot 10MM. Tub visibly fills but E10 still lands? The controller cannot read the level: the water-level sensor, a small pressure switch up top with a thin hose to the tub: SIMPSON ELECTROLUX WASHING MACHINE WATER LEVEL SENSOR. Blow through that hose first; a blocked or split one gives the same code for the price of nothing.
EF0: a zero, not an O
EF0 is a zero, though the seven-segment display keeps that to itself, hence all the searches for “EFO error”. It is the mirror of E10: the level passed its top limit, the base-tray float lifted, or the pump ran and the tub stayed full.
- Detergent. Too much powder, or top-loader detergent in a front loader, fools the sensor with suds. Run an empty hot cycle with none.
- Water in the base. Torch underneath. A wet tray means a leak: split hose, weeping pump, drawer overflow. Find it before any part.
- Pump filter. A pump that cannot clear the tub in time trips the overflow logic on some models.
Base dry, detergent fine? The level sensor is stuck high: on EWF front loaders the Electrolux Washing Machine Analogue Pressure Switch EWF1083, EWF1481, EWF1074, on top loaders the water level sensor above. If the filter was packed and the code came back, the pump is the suspect.
E20 and E21: the water will not leave
E20 is the drain timer: pump ran, sensor still saw water, machine stopped. E21 is the same fault on newer models, often with a spin that never starts. Cap clean, hose clear, tub still full: the pump. Humming but moving nothing means a jammed impeller; silent means a dead winding.

Won’t start after the code: the door lock
Filter cleared, power reset, and now it will not start at all; the door light flashes or a padlock shows. That is the door lock switch, E10’s companion fault: a lock that will not confirm stops the cycle before the fill, and a few hundred stop-and-restart cycles while you chased a code can finish it off.

Never bypass the lock; the interlock is what stops a spinning drum from opening.
Where the model sticker is and how to match it
Front loaders: the rim of the door opening, usually low on one side, or the top edge of the door. Top loaders: inside the lid or on the back panel near the hoses. Two numbers matter: the model (WWW9024M5WA, SWF12743, EWF1074 and so on) and the PNC, the product number code, which tells the Electrolux parts system which build you have. Same model, different PNC, can mean a different pump or door lock.
Search the model number on the site first. DIY or repairer?
Inlet valves, level sensors, door locks and drain pumps on this family sit in the $15–60 band, and each is a half-hour job with a Phillips head and the water and power off. A repairer call-out in most Australian cities runs $100–165 before the part, so a valve or pump swap is usually worth doing yourself. Stop and call someone when the base is wet and you cannot find the leak, the machine trips the safety switch, or the code changes to one you have not seen. Controllers are the last suspect, not the first; never fit one on a guess.
