Quick answer: A Samsung top loader that bangs, thumps or walks across the floor on the spin cycle almost always has worn suspension rods — the four rods that hang the inner tub from the cabinet corners. The dampers inside them go soft with age, the tub swings into the cabinet, and every spin sounds like someone kicking the machine. A set of four Samsung suspension rods is $39.95–$88.95 depending on the model and takes about an hour to fit with basic tools.

Match the symptom to the fault
| What happens | When | Most likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| Loud banging, tub hits the cabinet | As the spin ramps up, even with a balanced load | Worn suspension rods |
| Machine shakes violently or walks | Full-speed spin | Worn suspension rods, or feet not level |
| Unbalanced-load error, cycle keeps pausing to re-balance | Spin | Suspension can’t centre the tub — see the Samsung UE error guide |
| Banging only with one heavy item (towels, doona) | Spin | Genuinely unbalanced load — redistribute and retest first |
| Grinding or rumbling rather than banging | Throughout the spin | Bearings, not suspension — see the Samsung loud noise guide |
Why it happens
Inside a Samsung top loader the tub isn’t bolted down — it hangs from four suspension rods, one at each corner, each with a friction damper cup at the bottom. Every spin cycle works those dampers. After some years the damping grease dries and the cups wear, the rods stop absorbing movement, and the tub swings free until it slams the cabinet. It fails gradually: first the machine gets fussier about load balance, then it starts thumping on ordinary loads, and eventually it bangs and walks on every spin.
Rods wear as a set, so replace all four at once — fitting one new rod against three tired ones just moves the swing to the other corners.
Confirm the fault in five minutes
- Rule out the load. Run a spin with the machine empty. If it still bangs with nothing in it, it’s mechanical.
- Check the machine is level and all four feet sit firmly on the floor.
- Push down firmly on one corner of the open tub and let go. A healthy suspension lets the tub rise once and settle. If it bounces two or three times or clunks, the rods are worn.
- Look for witness marks — scuffs or shiny rub marks between the top of the tub and the cabinet rim show the tub has been hitting.
- Push the tub side to side. Excessive free swing with a sloppy, unchecked return confirms it.

Replacing the rods, step by step
- Unplug the machine and turn off the taps.
- Remove the screws at the back of the top panel and hinge the top of the cabinet forward (on most Samsung top loaders the whole top tilts up after the rear screws are out).
- You’ll see a rod hanging at each corner: a ball end in a socket at the top, damper cup under the tub bracket at the bottom.
- Do one rod at a time so the tub stays supported. Lift the tub slightly, pop the old rod’s ball out of its top socket, then unhook the bottom from the tub bracket.
- Fit the new rod bottom-first, seat the ball in the top socket, and move to the next corner.
- With all four fitted, do the bounce test again — one rise and settle — then close up and run an empty spin.
Allow about an hour. No special tools; a second pair of hands makes lifting the tub easier on big-capacity machines.
Repair cost summary (Australia 2026)
| Fix | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Level the feet and redistribute the load | $0 | 5 minutes |
| Set of four suspension rods (DIY) | $39.95–$88.95 | about an hour |
| Repairer callout plus the same rods | $200–$350+ | wait for a booking |
| New Samsung top loader | $700–$1,500 | — |
The 50% rule: suspension rods are a classic wear item on a machine that’s otherwise healthy. At $39.95–$88.95 for the full set, the repair is always worth it — the motor, board and drum have plenty of life left.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace just one Samsung suspension rod?
They wear together, so always fit the set of four. One new rod against three soft ones leaves the tub unbalanced and the banging comes back within weeks.
My Samsung top loader shows an unbalanced-load error on every spin — is that the rods?
If redistributing the load doesn’t clear it, worn suspension is the usual cause — the tub can no longer self-centre. Our Samsung UE error guide covers the full checklist.
The machine bangs even when it’s empty — what does that mean?
That confirms it’s mechanical rather than the load — almost always the suspension rods on a top loader. Do the bounce test above to be sure.
How do I find my Samsung model number?
On the model sticker under the lid or on the back panel. Samsung top loaders start with WA. Enter it in the Part Finder for the exact-fit rod kit.
Do these parts ship same day?
Yes — order before 12pm Sydney time for same-day dispatch Australia-wide, flat $10.60 shipping.
