Quick answer: a Bosch washer-dryer combo (WVH and WVG series) that leaks from the front door, or grows black mould the drum cycle can’t shift, needs its door seal (boot gasket) replaced. Combo machines punish their seals twice — hot drying cycles bake the rubber that washing keeps wet — so combo seals fail years before washer-only seals. Why combo seals die young
In a normal front loader the door seal lives a damp, room-temperature life. In a washer-dryer combo the same rubber is soaked at 40°C, then baked by drying air, load after load. The rubber hardens, micro-cracks at the folds, and starts seeping — usually first noticed as a small puddle at the front-left, or a mouldy smell that survives every drum-clean cycle because it lives inside the cracked folds.
Confirm it’s the seal (two minutes)
- Run your fingers around the inner folds of the gasket — hardened, shiny or cracked rubber is finished.
- Look for water tracks running from the bottom of the door opening down the front panel.
- A leak from underneath the machine instead points at hoses or the pump — see leaking from the bottom.

Combo seals have extra ports for the drying-air circuit — a washer-only Bosch seal will not fit, even when it looks close. This is a strictly match-by-model part.
Fitting it
The job follows the standard front-loader pattern — outer spring band off, old lip peeled from the cabinet flange, inner band off the tub, reverse with the new seal — with one combo-specific step: the drying duct port must seat fully before the bands go back. Frequently asked questions
The mould keeps returning no matter how I clean — replace or keep scrubbing?
Once mould is inside crack lines, no cleaner reaches it — the colony re-seeds every wash. Replacement is the only fix that sticks, then keep the door ajar between loads.
It only leaks on drying cycles — how can a seal leak with no water?
Combos condense water during drying. A cracked seal lets condensate weep where washing-cycle pressure wouldn’t — drying-only leaks are still a seal symptom on combos.
Is this why my towels smell musty after drying in the combo?
Very often. The drying air sweeps across the mouldy folds and through your load. New seal, smell gone.
