Quick answer: E4 on an Omega dishwasher means water has reached the base of the machine and lifted the anti-flood float switch. The machine stops and often runs the drain pump to protect your floor. The water got there from a leak (door seal, hose connection, sump seal), from overfilling (inlet valve or level sensor), or from heavy foaming. Unplug, empty the base by tilting the machine, find the source, then restart. E4 cannot be cleared while the base is wet.

An Omega dishwasher showing E4 has done exactly what it was designed to do. In the base of the machine, under the tub, is a shallow tray with a polystyrene float. If water collects in that tray the float rises, trips a switch, and the control board stops the program and shows E4. On many models it also runs the drain pump continuously and beeps, which is why E4 often arrives with a puddle and a noise.
E4 is the most searched Omega dishwasher code in Australia, and it is also the one owners most often try to clear by pressing buttons. That never works, because the switch stays tripped until the base is dry. This guide takes the fault in the right order: make the machine safe, empty the base, find where the water came from, fix that, and only then restart. It covers the ODW, OFI, ODI and OBDW ranges and the Omega-badged models built on the same platform.
Omega dishwasher E4: the causes, ranked, and how to check each
Codes are listed as they appear on the display. Where two generations of the platform use different codes for the same fault, both are shown. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering a part.
| Check, in order | What you are looking for | What it means if you find it | Fix / the part |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The base tray | Standing water under the tub when you tilt the machine back | Confirms E4 is genuine and not a stuck float | Tilt the machine backwards over a towel until the tray is empty; leave the door open to dry |
| 2. Door seal | Splits, hard corners or mould at the bottom corners of the tub gasket; a wet floor at the front | Water is escaping around the door during the wash | Replace the door seal; press it fully into its channel starting at the bottom corners |
 3. Inlet hose connection | Drips at the tap end or the machine end of the inlet hose, a cracked hose or a worn washer | Water is leaking outside the tub whenever the tap is on | Refit with a new washer or replace the inlet hose — fit the Dishwasher Aquastop Water Inlet Hose Smeg Omega DWA Series 0331 |
 4. Drain hose and connection | Wet under the sink, a split hose or a loose clamp at the pump | Leak on the drain side, usually during the drain phase | Refit or replace the drain hose and clamp — fit the Dishwasher Aquastop Water Inlet Hose Blanco Omega Bellini 0331 |
 5. Overfilling | Water above the heating element or the bottom of the door when you open it mid-fill | The inlet valve is not closing or the level sensor is not reading | Turn off the tap: if the machine fills when off, replace the inlet valve; otherwise clean the pressure chamber and check the level sensor — fit the Omega Dishwasher Inlet Valve ODW717WB, ODW702X, ODW507TXB, ODW707XB |
| 6. Foam | Suds in the tub or on the floor | Hand dishwashing liquid, too much detergent or rinse aid leaking into the tub | Run a rinse program empty; use only dishwasher detergent |
| 7. Sump and pump seals | Water under the machine only during the wash, with the door seal and hoses dry | The sump gasket or the circulation pump seal has hardened | Replace the sump gasket or the pump seal |
| 8. Spray arm or spray arm holder | Spray arm cracked or not seated, spraying at the door | Water thrown at the door seal at high pressure | Reseat or replace the spray arm |
| 9. Float switch itself | E4 with a dry base | The float is stuck up on debris or the switch has failed | Free the float and clean the tray; replace the float switch if E4 returns with the tray dry |
First: make it safe and empty the base
Switch the dishwasher off and unplug it, or turn it off at the isolator if it is hard-wired. Turn off the tap. Pull the machine out far enough to tilt it, put towels down, and lean it back until the water in the base runs out. Leave the door open for an hour so the tray can dry. Do not run it again yet. If you power it up now, the float is still up and the pump will just run again.
Then find the source, in the order above
Most E4 faults are the door seal or a hose connection, and both show themselves once you look. Run your fingers around the tub gasket and feel for splits and hard corners; look for a tide mark on the floor at the front of the machine. Check both ends of the inlet hose with the tap on and the machine off. If the seal and hoses are dry and the machine overfills instead, turn the tap off and watch: a machine that keeps filling with the tap off has an inlet valve that is not closing.
E4 with a dry base
Occasionally the tray is dry and E4 still shows. Then the float is stuck up on a piece of debris or the switch has failed closed. With the machine unplugged, remove the kick panel, find the float in the tray and make sure it drops freely. Clean the tray. If E4 returns with everything dry, replace the float switch.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.

Frequently asked questions
How do I clear E4 on an Omega dishwasher?
Unplug the machine, tilt it back to empty the base, let the tray dry, then find and fix the leak. Restart only when the base is dry; E4 cannot be cleared by pressing buttons while water is in the tray.
Is it safe to keep using the dishwasher with E4?
No. E4 means water is sitting in the base near the wiring and the pump. Turn it off, unplug it and empty the base before doing anything else.
Why does my Omega dishwasher keep pumping with E4 showing?
The float switch has tripped and the board is running the drain pump to protect your floor. It will stop once the base is dry and the float drops.
What is the most common cause of E4?
The door seal, followed by the inlet hose connection. Feel the tub gasket for splits and hard corners and check both ends of the inlet hose with the tap on.
Can too much detergent cause E4?
Yes. Heavy foam overflows the tub into the base and lifts the float. Run an empty rinse and use only dishwasher detergent in the right dose.
Where is the model number on an Omega dishwasher?
Open the door and look at the sticker on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, for example ODW702XB or OFI602X. Use it to match the door seal or hose.
Read the code, then fit the part
