Quick answer: A Bosch front-loader washing machine leaking from the door is nearly always a split, perished or mould-damaged door seal — the grey rubber bellows between the drum and the door. Genuine-fit Bosch door seals are $95.95–$119.95 depending on the series (WGA, WGG, WAU), and replacement is a one-to-two-hour DIY job: the seal is held by two spring clamp bands, no cabinet tear-down required. Find the right Bosch door seal by model number
Is it really the door seal?
| Where the water shows up | When | Most likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| Dripping from the bottom edge of the door glass | During wash or rinse | Torn or perished door seal |
| Trickle down the front panel, puddle at the front | During the cycle | Seal leaking behind the front panel |
| Water escaping at the top of the glass | Bulky loads or high water level | Mould or grit stopping the seal lip closing on the glass |
| Puddle under the machine, door area dry | Mainly during drain or spin | Not the seal — see the leaking-from-the-bottom guide |
Quick test: close the door on a strip of paper and pull — if it slides out with no resistance at any point around the rim, the seal isn’t gripping there. Full method in our door seal grip test guide.
Why Bosch door seals fail
- Nicks and splits. Bra wires, zips and buckles catch in the folds; one small nick becomes a spraying split within a few hot washes.
- Mould and perishing. Black mould is more than cosmetic — it pits the rubber until the lip can’t seal. Bosch’s WGG series is a known case: our WGG24402AU door seal mould guide covers cleaning versus replacement for that machine.
- Blocked drain holes. The small holes in the bottom fold let water back into the tub. Packed with lint, the fold becomes a permanent pond that accelerates perishing and finds every flaw.
Confirm the fault in five minutes
- Dry the seal and glass completely with a towel.
- Work around the folds with your fingers under good light, feeling for nicks, splits and hardened patches — especially in the bottom third where water sits.
- Clear the drain holes in the bottom fold of lint and grit.
- Run a short hot wash and watch with a torch. The first drip tells you exactly where the seal has failed.
- Any visible tear, crack or through-stain means replacement. Rubber that flexes on every cycle can’t be patched.

Bosch seals are model-family specific and the profiles don’t interchange. Your model number is on the model sticker inside the door opening — run it through the Part Finder to confirm the exact-fit seal before ordering.
Replacing the seal, step by step
- Unplug the machine and open the door fully.
- Peel the outer lip of the old seal off the cabinet flange and lever off the outer spring clamp band with a flat screwdriver.
- Push the seal in toward the drum and release the inner clamp band holding it to the tub. On Bosch machines the top of the cabinet or the front panel can be removed for easier hand access.
- Note the orientation — drain holes face down, and there are locating lugs at the top that must line up with the tub marks.
- Seat the new seal on the tub lip first, working it round evenly with your thumbs, then refit the inner band.
- Stretch the outer lip over the cabinet flange, refit the outer band, and run a hot 60-degree wash to confirm it’s dry.
Allow one to two hours the first time. The technique is the same as in our general door seal replacement guide.
Repair cost summary (Australia 2026)
| Fix | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Deep-clean seal and drain holes yourself | $0 | 15 minutes |
| New Bosch door seal (DIY) | $95.95–$119.95 | 1–2 hours |
| Repairer callout plus the same seal | $260–$400+ | wait for a booking |
| New Bosch front loader | $1,000–$2,000 | — |
The 50% rule: Bosch front loaders routinely outlast two door seals. At around $100 the seal is a tenth or less of replacing the machine — on a washer that otherwise runs well, it’s always worth doing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I glue or patch a split Bosch door seal?
No. The seal flexes on every load and holds water against a spinning drum — adhesive patches let go within weeks. Replace the seal.
My Bosch seal is mouldy but not leaking yet — clean or replace?
If the mould wipes off with a proper deep clean, keep it and leave the door ajar between loads. If the rubber is stained through, pitted or hardened, it’s already on the way out — for WGG owners the WGG24402AU mould guide walks through the call.
Why is my machine still leaking after I fitted a new seal?
Almost always seating: the inner band not evenly on the tub lip, or the seal rotated so the drain holes aren’t at the bottom. Refit and check the locating lugs. If the drum has visible play, worn bearings can also chew the new seal.
Where is my Bosch model number?
On the model sticker just inside the door opening. Bosch washer models start with letters such as WGA, WGG, WAU, WAW or WAP. Enter it in the Part Finder for the exact-fit seal.
