Quick answer: Run a rangehood checklist in this order: the grease filters, the carbon filter if it recirculates, the duct and the outside flap, the switches, then the lamps and the fan. Greasy filters and a blocked duct explain most hoods that roar and still leave the kitchen smoky. The parts that follow are the halogen or LED lamp, the run capacitor and the fan motor, each matched by the model number on your sticker.

Before you start: the sticker is behind the filter
On most rangehoods the model sticker is inside the canopy, visible once the grease filters are out, or on the top of the chimney cover. Write the full code down now, because lamps in particular are matched by it: a 12V halogen, a mains halogen, a 350mA LED and a 4V LED module all look alike from the kitchen floor and are not interchangeable. Switch the hood off at the isolator or the plug before you touch a lamp holder or the fan.
The 10-point rangehood checklist
Checks 1 to 6 cost nothing and fix most hoods that seem weak.
| # | Check | How | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grease filters | Unclip the mesh filters; hold them to the light | Grease-blocked mesh halves the airflow and makes the fan roar | Soak in hot water and degreaser; dishwasher if the manual allows |
| 2 | Carbon filter | Recirculating hoods only: pull the round or flat charcoal filter behind the mesh | A spent carbon filter means smells come straight back | Replace every 3 to 6 months |
| 3 | Duct and flap | Ducted hoods: look up the duct with a torch; check the flap at the wall or roof opens | A stuck flap or a crushed flexible duct chokes a healthy fan | Free the flap; replace crushed duct |
| 4 | Mode | Ducted hood set to ducted, not recirculating; slide or touch controls not in lock | Wrong mode blows the air back into the cupboard | Reset |
| 5 | Power | Lights come on? Try the plug behind the chimney cover in another socket if you can reach it | No lights and no fan: the socket or the isolator, not the hood | Another socket; electrician |
| 6 | Switches | Each speed and the light switch click and respond | One speed dead, others fine: the switch block | Switch by model |
| 7 | Lamp | One or both lights out; check the lamp type on the sticker or the old lamp | Halogen lamps fail every year or two; LED modules fail as a unit | Lamp (table below) |
| 8 | Hum, no fan | Motor hums, blades still, or starts with a push | Run capacitor has failed | Capacitor (table below) |
| 9 | Noisy or rattling | Rattle at low speed, grinding at high speed | Blade loose on the shaft, or the motor bearing dry | Tighten the blade; fan motor by model |
| 10 | Dead on all speeds, lights fine | Lights work, no fan on any speed, no hum | Fan motor open, or the thermal cut-out inside it | Fan motor by model; licensed repairer |
Where the free checks end and the parts begin
Checks 7 to 10 point at a part. On the rangehoods sold in Australia the lamp is the part that fails first and most often, then the run capacitor, then the fan motor. All three are plug-in jobs on most hoods once the filters and the lamp cover are out, with the hood off at the isolator. A noisy motor has its own page: rangehood motor noisy, humming or rattling.
Match the lamp to your model sticker
Rangehood lamps are the part people buy wrong. Three families cover most hoods: a 12V 20W halogen capsule with two pins, a mains-voltage halogen in a holder, and an LED module with a small driver that must match the hood’s driver output. Rangehood light not working: LED module or halogen walks through telling them apart. Match the full code on your sticker against the listing title before you order.

Not in the table? Browse all rangehood parts, read which brands use the LSD-3 and SYKL08 LED modules and the Arda LED replacement, or send us your model code with a photo of the old lamp and we check it first. Fan motors and switch blocks are model-specific and not on our shelf, so send the model code for a quote.
How each part is tested before you buy
Lamp. With the hood off, pull the lamp cover and the lamp. A halogen with a broken filament or a blackened capsule is dead. An LED module that is dark while its twin works is dead; if both are dark, check the driver’s output with a meter before buying two modules. Never touch a new halogen capsule with bare fingers; the skin oil shortens its life.
Capacitor. A hum with the blade still, and a fan that runs if you flick the blade, is the run capacitor. Read the value printed on the old one and match it. Discharge it before you handle the terminals.
Fan motor. With the hood off and the blade free, spin it by hand: stiff or gritty means a dry bearing. No hum at all on any speed with the lights working means the motor winding or its thermal cut-out has failed. Both are a motor by model number.
When to stop and call a licensed repairer
Stop when the hood is hard-wired and the fault is past the lamp, when the control panel is dead with power proven, when the motor has failed on a hood you cannot reach safely, or when there is a burning smell from the motor rather than from the filters. Hard-wired hoods are an electrician’s job in Australia; a licensed repairer handles the control board and the motor swap on a high canopy. A call-out typically runs $100–165 before parts, and on a hood past twelve years that quote is the moment to weigh repair against replacement.
Monthly: the five-minute version
- Grease filters out and soaked.
- Canopy and lamp covers wiped.
- Carbon filter date checked on a recirculating hood.
- Run the hood for ten minutes after cooking to clear the duct.
- A quick look at both lamps while the covers are off.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my rangehood so loud but not pulling any smoke?
Greasy filters and a blocked or crushed duct. The fan works harder against the blockage and moves less air. Clean the filters and check the flap outside before you suspect the motor.
Why has my rangehood light stopped working?
Halogen lamps have a short life and simply burn out. LED modules fail as a unit, or their driver fails, which takes out both lamps at once. Check the type on the sticker before you buy.
Why does my rangehood hum but the fan does not turn?
The run capacitor has failed. If the fan runs when you flick the blade, that confirms it. Match the value printed on the old capacitor.
Can I use any 12V halogen in my rangehood?
Match the voltage, the wattage and the pin type. A 12V capsule in a mains holder, or a 50W lamp where the hood takes 20W, melts the holder. Stay with the listed lamp.
How often should I replace the carbon filter?
Every three to six months on a recirculating hood, sooner with a lot of frying. Grease filters are washed, not replaced, unless the mesh is torn.
Is it worth repairing an old rangehood?
For a lamp or a capacitor, always. For a fan motor on a hood past twelve years, compare the motor quote with a new hood of the same width.
