Quick answer: A loud LG fridge is nearly always a fan motor. A buzz, whirr or squeal from inside the freezer is the evaporator fan — often chirping as ice touches the blades or as the motor bearing dries out. A rattle or hum from the back near the floor is the condenser fan. Both are $29.95–$77.95 parts you can swap with a screwdriver. A clicking that repeats every few minutes is different — that’s the compressor trying to start, and it has its own guide.

Match the noise to the fault
| What you hear | Where from | Most likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| Buzzing, whirring or a helicopter chop | Inside, behind the freezer wall | Evaporator fan — iced blades or worn bearing |
| Squealing or chirping that changes when you open the door | Freezer compartment | Evaporator fan motor bearing |
| Rattling or droning hum | Back of the fridge, near the floor | Condenser fan motor |
| Clicking every 2–5 minutes | Back, near the compressor | Compressor start relay — see the clicking guide |
| Gurgling or trickling after the door closes | Inside walls | Refrigerant doing its job — completely normal |
The freezer fan (the usual suspect)
Open the freezer while the fridge is noisy. If the sound is coming from behind the rear panel — and gets briefly louder when the compartment is running — it’s the evaporator fan. Two failure modes: ice building up until it touches the blades (fix the defrost fault too, or it returns), or the motor bearing wearing until it squeals. LG uses different fans across the range, so match yours:
| Your LG fridge | Part | Price |
|---|---|---|
GR-332SF through GR-602TVF top mounts | LG evaporator freezer fan motor for the GR series | $29.95 |
GC-B197 side by side | LG side-by-side evaporator fan motor 13VDC | $34.95 |
Side-by-side freezer section (13VDC, later models) | LG side-by-side evaporator freezer fan motor | $53.90 |
Two-speed freezer fan models | LG two-speed evaporator freezer fan motor | $77.95 |
GF and SG series bottom mounts | LG evaporator fan motor for the GF and SG series | $49.95 |
The swap: unplug the fridge, empty the freezer, remove the rear compartment panel (a few screws and clips), unplug the fan connector and transfer the blade to the new motor if yours arrives without one. If the old fan was encased in ice, the defrost system needs attention as well or the noise will be back in a fortnight.
The condenser fan (rattle at the back)
A drone or rattle from behind the fridge near the floor is the condenser fan, which cools the compressor. Dust and pet hair kill these: pull the fridge out, unplug it, remove the rear access panel and vacuum first — sometimes that’s the whole fix. If the motor itself grinds on, fit the LG condenser fan motor for the GF and GS series ($49.95) or, on the larger GF-B730/GF-D706/GF-V706 bottom mounts, the LG DC fan motor assembly ($49.95).
Noises that are not a fault
Gurgles, pops, and creaks a few minutes after the door closes are refrigerant flow and panels flexing with temperature — every modern LG does it. Ice cracking during the defrost cycle is normal too. The noises worth fixing are the ones that persist: squeals, rattles, and anything that speeds up and slows down with the fans.
Repair cost summary (Australia 2026)
| Cause | Part cost | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuum the condenser area | $0 | 15 minutes |
| Evaporator (freezer) fan motor | $29.95–$77.95 | 45–60 minutes |
| Condenser fan motor | $49.95 | 45 minutes |
| Technician callout for the same job | commonly $200–$350 | — |
| New LG fridge | $1,000–$3,500 | — |
The 50% rule: a sub-$80 fan motor on a four-figure fridge is an easy call — and no fan swap touches the sealed refrigeration system, so it’s legal, safe DIY.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my LG fridge making a loud buzzing noise?
Buzzing or whirring from inside the freezer is the evaporator fan — usually ice on the blades or a worn motor. From the back near the floor, it’s the condenser fan. Both are DIY-replaceable parts.
The noise stops when I open the freezer door. What does that mean?
That confirms the evaporator fan — LG pauses it when the door opens. Replace the fan motor, and check for ice buildup while you’re in there.
My LG clicks every few minutes and isn’t cooling well. Same problem?
No — repeated clicking is the compressor start relay failing to launch the compressor. See our fridge clicking noise guide for that fix.
How do I find my LG fridge model number?
On the model sticker inside the fridge compartment, usually on the left wall or behind the crisper. Enter it in the Part Finder for the exact-fit fan.
Do these parts ship same day?
Yes — order by 12pm Sydney time for same-day dispatch Australia-wide.
