A quick word on LG Direct Drive — why these machines are different
LG built its washing-machine reputation on one thing: Direct Drive. No belt, no pulley, no gearbox. The motor stator bolts straight to the back of the outer tub, and the rotor — a big magnet ring — bolts directly to the back of the drum. The drum is the motor. Fewer parts spinning means fewer parts wearing — which is why LG happily ships most models here with a ****.
The flip side: when an LG does fault, the fault tree is short and specific. The motor doesn’t fail randomly — the Hall sensor that watches the motor is what fails. The door doesn’t fail randomly — the interlock that confirms the door is closed is what fails. Once you know the pattern, you know the part.
Find your model number first — it changes the part
LG model numbers tell you the series, capacity and generation. Get the prefix and capacity right and you’re most of the way to the correct part.
Three places to look:
- Door rim (front-loaders) — open the door, look around the inside edge of the front opening.
- Inside the lid (top-loaders) — flip the lid up. Sticker on the underside or the inner front rim of the cabinet.
- Back of the cabinet — second nameplate riveted to the back panel. Stays legible long after the front sticker has faded.

Capacity is in the model number. WD12 = 12kg rated platform (often 7.5–8kg actual capacity on older models — LG’s numbering is a platform number, not always kg). WV5/WV7/WV9 = generation tier (5 = entry, 9 = premium). WTG9020V = 9kg top-loader. Confirm by part number, not capacity — the bracket and connector layout changed between generations.

LG error codes — the ones we get asked about every week
LG washers display the fault on the screen (or via flashing lights on older WD-series models). The codes are consistent across the AU LG range — same letter pair generally means the same fault family whether it’s a 2010 WD-1227RD or a 2024 WV9-1412W.

CL throws first-time LG owners constantly — it’s a feature, not a fault. Two-button hold, 3 seconds, gone.

The six faults — and the parts that fix them
1. DE error / door won’t lock → door interlock switch (the #1 LG washer fault)
If we had to bet on a single LG washer fault we’ll ship a part for this week, it’d be this one. The door interlock switch is the dual-microswitch + PTC heater module behind the door catch — it senses that the door is mechanically closed and heats a small element that physically locks the door for the cycle.
Two failure modes: the PTC element burns out (door won’t lock, DE before the cycle starts) or the microswitch contacts fail (door appears to lock, but the control board can’t confirm — DE mid-cycle). Either way, the cure is a new interlock. 15-minute swap with a screwdriver. LG has been making this part on the same physical platform for over a decade — which is why it’s the single most cross-fitted LG washer part in our catalogue.
Before you order: check the door catch itself. The plastic hook on the door swings into the interlock — if it’s bent or sloppy, the interlock reads “not closed” with a perfectly healthy switch. Open and close the door slowly — listen for a solid click. Loose? Fix the catch first.

The swap: open the door, two screws hold the interlock through the front panel just inside the door opening, unplug the loom (single connector), swap, refit. 15 minutes.
2. OE error / won’t drain → drain pump
OE on an LG means the machine ran the drain cycle but the pressure sensor still sees water in the drum. Three causes, in this order: blocked pump filter, kinked drain hose, then the pump motor.
Pump filter first (free, 5 minutes). All LG WD/WV front-loaders have a coin trap behind a small access flap at the bottom-front of the cabinet. Towel down, shallow tray ready (it holds about half a litre), unscrew the cap anti-clockwise, pull the filter, fish out the coins, hair ties, kids’ Lego pieces. Rinse, refit, retry. The filter housing itself is the drain pump filter (WD12021D6 / WD13020D1 era) — we stock replacements when the original cracks.
Drain hose next. Pull the drain hose off the standpipe at the back. Drop it into a bucket. Run a spin. Gravity-drains into the bucket → hose is clear, your wall standpipe is the blockage. Nothing comes out → pump’s the problem.

That wide-fit front-loader pump is one platform covering most of the WD-series for over a decade. Confirm against your model before ordering, but if you’ve got a Direct Drive WD front-loader from 2010 onwards, this is almost certainly the pump.
While you’re in there: if the pump’s gone after 5+ years, the filter housing and drain hose clamp are often perished too. Grab both at once so you don’t pull the front panel off twice. Full dishwasher version of this fault: LG dishwasher OE error.
3. IE error / won’t fill → inlet valve
The inlet valve is a solenoid block at the back of the cabinet, near where the hoses come in. Opens when the machine wants water, closes when it doesn’t. After 5–10 years on 240V mains with Sydney’s hard mineral water, either the coil burns out or grit lodges under the diaphragm.
Before you order: turn both taps fully on at the wall (we get IE calls every week from people whose plumber turned the laundry tap off and never told them). Unscrew the inlet hoses at the tap end and rinse the mesh screen filters inside the brass fittings — Sydney mains, especially on the older galvanised plumbing in parts of the inner west, packs these with limescale and rust flakes. Five-minute free fix.

The swap: unplug power, pull the machine out, drop the top panel (3 screws at the back), unclip the wiring loom from the valve, hose clamps off, two mounting screws, swap, reverse. 20–30 minutes with a Phillips and pliers.
4. LE error / motor fault → Hall sensor (Direct Drive’s signature failure)
LE is the LG code we get asked about more than any other after DE. The Direct Drive control board needs to know where the rotor is at every millisecond to pulse the stator electromagnets correctly. That feedback comes from the Hall effect sensor — a small PCB on the back of the motor, behind the rotor magnet ring. Sensor goes noisy or dies → board can’t time the pulses → LE.
Symptoms that point to Hall sensor:
– LE on spin but not on wash — high RPM stresses a failing sensor first.
– LE intermittent — clears on a power reset, comes back later.
– LE at the same point every cycle (e.g. final spin when speed ramps).

Full diagnosis and the three-check sequence: LG washing machine LE error — what it means and how to fix it.
The swap: power off at the wall, drop the back panel (4–6 screws), single bolt holds the rotor on — pull it off. Hall sensor PCB sits behind the rotor, two screws, one connector. 20–30 minutes. No mains rewiring.
5. Rumble / banging on spin → tub bearings and lip seal
A loud rumble that builds up as spin speed climbs is almost always the tub bearings. LG uses a pair of bearings on the rear of the outer tub with a lip seal between them and the drum. Water leaks past the lip seal, attacks the bearing grease, rear bearing rusts → rumble, then knocking, then eventually the spider arm snaps off the back of the drum.
If the same machine is also throwing LE with the rumble, that’s a bad combination — failing bearings can drag enough on the motor to trigger LE before they fail mechanically.

Hard truth: bearing replacement on an LG Direct Drive is a 3–4 hour job that involves splitting the outer tub. Older models — perimeter bolts; newer models — welded rim that has to be split and reassembled with self-tappers. The aftermarket kit saves you several hundred dollars in parts vs a tech, but if the machine’s 10+ years old, the maths on a new washer starts to enter the conversation.
The spider shaft: the rear-of-drum aluminium spider can corrode and snap. One spider shaft listing covers F1222TD through F14A8RDS and the WD-14312–14570 family. This is the one job where you might justify a tech. Interlocks, pumps, valves, Hall sensors — all DIY. Tub bearings is where DIY gets serious.
6. HE error / no heat → heater element (front-loaders with internal heat)
Most LG front-loaders sold here have an internal heater element — a stainless steel U-shape in the bottom of the outer tub. Limescale cracks the sheath or the wire burns out → HE code and the cycle skips heat or stops entirely.
Symptoms:
– HE code 20–40 minutes into a cycle (when the heat phase kicks in).
– Cold wash on a hot cycle — water never warms up.
– Element shorting to chassis trips your house RCD when the heat phase starts. Power point trips when the washer hits heat → element is shorting, order the replacement.

The swap: drop the back panel, find the element protruding from the back of the outer tub (single hex nut, single wiring connector). Slacken, pull, swap, refit. Critical: the element clamps onto a rubber gasket — firm but not gorilla-tight on the nut, or you’ll deform the gasket and the back will leak. 30–40 minutes.
LG top-loaders (WTG and WT-series) are cold-fill only — no internal heater. HE only appears on front-loaders. If a top-loader isn’t washing in hot, the tap or the hot-side inlet valve is the suspect.
Pressure switches and the PE / 1E / FE codes
PE, 1E and FE all trace to the water pressure switch — a small sensor connected to the bottom of the outer tub by a clear plastic tube. The tube reads air pressure in the tub (= how much water is in the drum). Tube clogs with detergent residue, or the switch itself fails → pressure-related codes.

My LG washer shows DE every cycle and won’t start — what is it?
The door interlock switch. DE means the machine can’t confirm the door is mechanically locked. Check the door catch first (the plastic hook on the door swings into the interlock — if it’s bent or loose, the interlock reads “not closed”). If the catch is solid, the interlock itself has failed. One interlock version covers the WD-1219 / WD-1227 / WD-1255 / WD-1256 / F1069 family; a different version covers the WD12590 / WD1408 / WV5 / WV9 family. Open the listing and match the model number on your sticker against the listing title.
What’s the difference between LE and CE on an LG washer?
Both are motor codes, different layers. LE = motor / rotor-lock fault — usually the Hall sensor reading the rotor position has failed. CE = motor overcurrent — the motor is drawing too much current, usually because the stator winding has shorted or the rotor is mechanically dragging (failing bearings can do this too). LE is cheap (Hall sensor swap). CE is expensive (motor or control board). Diagnose carefully before ordering.
My LG is showing CL — is the machine broken?
No — CL is child lock active. It’s a feature, not a fault. Press the two child-lock buttons together (the ones marked with the small icons next to “Child Lock” on the panel) and hold for 3 seconds. Cleared. We get this call multiple times a month.
My WD-1255RD is making a slap-slap-slap rumble on spin — bearings or Hall sensor?
That sound is bearings — failing tub bearings produce a rumble that builds up as spin speed climbs and stays loud regardless of load. Hall sensor faults produce LE error codes, not noise. Run a spin with no clothes — if it’s quiet, it was just an unbalanced load (UE). If it’s still loud, bearings. The newer WD-series lip seal & bearings kit covers the WD-1255RD.
The motor itself rarely fails. What fails is the Hall sensor that monitors the motor (cheap fix), the bearings that the drum spins on (one biggish fix at 8–12 years), and the interlock that confirms the door is shut (cheap, common). The motor underneath all of that mostly just keeps going.
My LG WTG9020V top-loader has stopped spinning and shows UE — what is it?
UE is the unbalanced-load code. First check: pull the clothes out, redistribute them, restart. Top-loaders are sensitive to towels-on-one-side, sheets-bundled, that kind of thing. If UE comes back on a fairly balanced load, the suspension rods holding the inner tub are worn — they let the drum bounce too far off-centre, triggering the imbalance sensor. Less commonly, the Hall sensor on the top-loader motor is reading wrong RPM and the control board flags UE instead of LE.
How long should an LG washing machine last in Australia?
With a part swap or two along the way — 12 to 15 years on a Direct Drive front-loader, often longer on a top-loader. The wear points are predictable: door interlock around years 5–8, drain pump around years 7–10, Hall sensor any time after year 5, bearings around years 10–13. The motor itself usually outlasts the cabinet.
Are LG and Samsung washer parts interchangeable?
No. They look superficially similar (both Korean, both heavy on direct-drive marketing) but the mounting brackets, connector pinouts and physical dimensions are different. LG uses EBF / 5859ER / 5220FR / 6501KW part families; Samsung uses DC34 / DC31 / DC62 / DC96. Always match by LG part number. Send your LG model through the Part Finder for the exact one.
