Quick answer: The F&P top-loader lint filter has narrow niches that everyday rinsing doesn’t reach — that’s why dust and biofilm accumulate even after you “clean” it. The fix is a 5-minute deep-clean with a soft toothbrush + diluted white vinegar, NOT a stiff brush (which scores the plastic and makes future cleaning harder). If the filter is more than 18 months old AND won’t come fully clean even after this routine — it’s at end-of-life. Replace with the F&P lint filter 2-pack — same-day Sydney dispatch.

Why the F&P filter is harder to clean than it should be
The filter is a deep mesh basket with several narrow channels and ridges. The design traps fine fluff (which is good) but the same channels resist water flow during a rinse (which is bad). Three things accumulate in there:
- Lint dust — fine fluff bonded together by detergent residue.
- Biofilm — microbial slime that grows on damp plastic in warm laundries.
- Mineral scale — calcium/magnesium deposits from AU mains water (especially Sydney CBD, Brisbane, Perth, anywhere on bore supply).
A rinse under the tap clears the surface lint but doesn’t touch the deeper deposits. They build up until water flow through the filter is restricted, then the filter starts shedding trapped lint back into the drum on the next wash.
The 5-minute deep clean (do this every 2-3 months)
What you need
- Soft children’s toothbrush (NOT a hard adult one — see why below).
- White vinegar (cheap supermarket grade, ~$2/L).
- Hot tap water.
- A bowl or small jug.
Procedure
- Pull the filter from the agitator cap. Tap it lightly over a bin to dislodge loose lint.
- Rinse under hot running tap water, basket-side facing the spray.
- Mix vinegar solution in the bowl — 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts hot water (e.g. 100ml vinegar + 300ml hot water).
- Soak the filter for 10 minutes. The vinegar dissolves mineral scale and loosens biofilm.
- Scrub with the soft toothbrush — work the bristles into every channel and ridge, especially the corner joints where the deposits cake worst.
- Rinse thoroughly under hot running water until you can’t smell vinegar.
- Air-dry for 5-10 minutes before refitting — wet filters refitted directly trap moisture against the agitator cap.
If the filter looks visibly cleaner and lighter in colour after this — you’ve extended its life by 3-6 months. Do this routine every quarter.
Why NOT a stiff brush
Hard-bristle brushes scratch the plastic surface — small score marks that:
- Give biofilm more surface area to colonise (so it grows back faster).
- Trap lint in the scratches (so future rinses are less effective).
- Eventually weaken the plastic enough that the tabs snap prematurely.
A soft children’s toothbrush has bristles soft enough not to score but firm enough to dislodge soft deposits. Don’t overthink the tool — a 30-cent toothbrush is the right answer.
Don’t use these (they damage the filter)
| Tool | Why not |
|---|---|
| Wire brush | Scratches the polymer, accelerates degradation |
| Bleach (undiluted) | Weakens the plastic over months of repeat use |
| Boiling water | Warps the filter shape, especially the tabs |
| Steel wool | Same as wire brush, worse |
| Acid descaler (CLR, Calgon at full strength) | Overkill; vinegar is gentle enough and works |
| Compressed air | Just blows lint dust around the laundry, doesn’t dislodge embedded biofilm |
When the filter is past saving
Some filters won’t come clean even with vinegar + toothbrush. Tell-tale signs:
- Permanent brown/grey staining in the channels that doesn’t lighten after soak.
- The mesh basket feels rough or fuzzy to the touch (polymer surface degrading).
- The plastic is yellowed compared to a new one.
- Tabs are starting to crack — even hairlines mean replacement is imminent anyway.
At that point, deep cleaning is delaying the inevitable. Replace.

Habit changes that extend filter life
- Leave the lid open between cycles — dries the filter, prevents biofilm growth.
- Run a 60°C+ tub-clean cycle monthly — kills biofilm before it gets a foothold.
- Halve your detergent dose — modern AU concentrated detergents at AU mains pressure foam more than the dose chart assumes. Less residue, cleaner filter.
- Don’t wash heavy pet bedding without a pre-shake-out — most pet hair ends up bonded into the filter mesh.
DIY parts vs callout
| Path | What you typically pay | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| F&P tech callout for “machine smells / clothes coming out linty” | $180-$280 | They’ll clean or replace the filter you can do yourself |
| Deep clean + replace (DIY) | $2 (vinegar) → part cost | 5 min cleaning, 60 sec swap when replacing |

FAQs
How often should I deep-clean (vinegar soak) vs rinse?
Light rinse after every cycle (10 seconds under the tap, while you’re emptying the drum anyway). Vinegar soak deep-clean every 8-12 weeks. Replacement every 18-30 months.
Will a dishwasher tab work instead of vinegar?
It works (the surfactants dissolve biofilm), but it’s overkill and can leave residue. Stick to white vinegar — it’s cheaper and rinses cleaner.
My filter smells musty even after deep cleaning — fault?
Smell that survives a vinegar soak = biofilm has colonised into the polymer surface. At that point you’re better off replacing. Once smell is in the filter, it transfers to your wet laundry on every cycle.
Can I run the filter through the dishwasher?
Technically yes, on the top rack at low temp. But the high-temp wash cycle warps the tabs. Vinegar + toothbrush is gentler.
Why is my filter clogging faster than it used to?
Three possibilities — (a) you’ve changed detergent brand and the new one leaves more residue, (b) you’ve started washing more pet/kid/heavy-fluff items, (c) the filter polymer has degraded and the surface no longer sheds water cleanly (replace).
