Quick answer: The Fisher & Paykel WL1064G1 (Series 5 top-loader, sold from 2020) locks the lid for the entire wash and rinse phase, not just spin. That’s a deliberate F&P safety change, not a fault — but it’s why so many AU households hate it for soaking or topping up with rainwater-tank supply. There’s no DIY override that’s safe — the alternatives are: pre-soak before starting, use the Soak program (some sub-variants only), or run a Rinse+Spin cycle to interrupt. If your lid is locked AND won’t unlock at the end of the cycle, that IS a fault — the lid switch sensor has failed. We stock the F&P lid switch sensor (P/N FP426515) for the older GW/MW/IW series.

Two different situations — which one are you in?
Situation A: Lid locks during the whole cycle (works as designed)
This is the WL1064G1 + WL1264P1 + most Series 5 top-loaders behaving correctly. F&P changed the lid-lock logic around 2018 for safety + water-conservation reasons:
- Older F&P SmartDrives (WA1068G1, WA8060G1 era): lid only locked during spin. You could lift it mid-wash to soak items or add water.
- Modern F&P (WL1064G1 onwards): lid locks at cycle start and stays locked until cycle ends.
If your machine is locking the lid through the wash phase and unlocking at the end — that’s the new behaviour, not a fault. Skip to the “Workarounds” section below.
Situation B: Lid locks and DOESN’T unlock at end of cycle (real fault)
If the cycle finishes but the lid stays locked after 2-3 minutes of waiting, you have a genuine fault. Three causes:
- Lid switch / sensor has failed — most common
- Drain fault leaving water in the drum (safety interlock prevents lid release while water remains)
- Control board fault
Walk the diagnosis below.
Workarounds for the “feature, not a fault” version
If you’re in Situation A and want to soak or top up with tank water:
- Pre-soak in the drum before starting. Throw items in, fill manually with a hose / bucket through the lid, leave 1-2 hours, THEN press Start.
- Use the Soak program if your sub-variant has one (check your manual — some WL series have a dedicated Soak that pauses with the lid unlocked).
- Run a Rinse+Spin cycle to abort mid-wash. If you realise you need to add an item, press Stop → wait for the cycle to drain → select Rinse+Spin → start. Drum empties, lid unlocks at the end of that cycle, you can add the item, then restart the wash from the beginning.
There is no safe firmware mod or switch bypass. The interlock is wired into the safety circuit and bypassing it would let the drum spin with the lid open — genuinely dangerous.
Situation B: Lid won’t unlock after cycle — diagnosis
Step 1: Check the drum is empty (60 seconds)
F&P top-loaders refuse to unlock the lid if the water-level sensor detects water in the drum (safety: spinning water at 1000+ RPM with an open lid would be catastrophic).
- Run a drain or spin-only cycle to clear any residual water.
- Listen for the pump running.
- If pump runs and drum drains → lid should unlock at cycle end. Fixed.
- If pump doesn’t run → drain fault, see our washing machine not draining spoke. Fix that first.
Step 2: Power-cycle the machine (60 seconds)
- Power off at the wall for 5 minutes (the control board needs to fully de-energise).
- Power back on.
- If the lid releases on power-up → was a one-off latch fault.
- If still locked → move to step 3.
Step 3: Manual lid release (5 minutes — last resort)
If you need the lid open RIGHT NOW (e.g. cycle stalled with wet clothes inside), F&P top-loaders have a manual release behind the top-front cover:
- Power off at the wall.
- Locate the screws at the back of the top panel (2-3 screws). Remove.
- Slide the top panel back 5cm — exposes the lid lock mechanism.
- Find the release pin or cable (varies by model — usually a small lever near the front-right corner).
- Manually release the latch.
This is documented in the F&P service manual. It does not fix the fault — the lid switch sensor still needs replacement before normal operation will resume.
Step 4: Replace the lid switch sensor
For the older F&P top-loader range (GW, MW, IW, AW series — 2008-2016):
- F&P lid switch sensor — fits AW085, AW095, GW501, GW503, GW508, GW509, GW601, GW603, GW608, GW609, GW701, GW703, GW708, GW709, IW509, IW609, IW709, IW710, IW810, IWC09, IWL10, IWM10, LW015, LW035, LW085, LW095, MW051, MW053, MW058, MW059, MW061, MW071, MW511, MW611, MW711.
For the modern WL1064G1 / WL1264P1 lid lock assembly — different part. Run your model through the Part Finder and we’ll match the correct lock.
The swap: 30-45 minute job. Top panel off, single mounting bracket, 1-2 connectors. Hand tools only.
Related part: water level sensor (for WL1064G1 specifically)
A common companion fault on the WL1064G1 is the water-level (pressure) sensor drifting — the control board can’t tell if the drum is empty, so it refuses to unlock the lid even though the pump has drained.
F&P water level sensor — fits WL1064G1, WL1264P1, 93297-A, 93299-A — direct fit, in stock.
If you’ve swapped the lid switch and the lid still won’t release at end-of-cycle, this is the next part to test.
DIY parts vs callout
| Path | What you typically pay | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| F&P authorised tech + diagnosis + part + labour | $350-$500 | + premium for warranty-trained techs |
| Order the part, fit it yourself | Part only | 30-45 min DIY, hand tools |
Lid switch and water-level sensor are both low-voltage components on a switched output from the control board — no licensed-electrician work.

FAQs
Why did F&P change the lid lock behaviour on the WL series?
Two reasons F&P have publicly cited: (a) safety — preventing child injury from reaching into a spinning drum, and (b) water efficiency compliance for the AU Water Efficiency Labelling Standards scheme. The locked lid prevents cycle interruption that would force a re-rinse.
My WL1064G1 lid won’t unlock between cycles either — is that normal?
No — the lid should unlock as soon as the cycle ends and the drum is empty. If it stays locked between cycles, the lid switch sensor or the water-level sensor has failed.
Can I add the Soak function to a WL1064G1 that doesn’t have one?
No — Soak is a firmware-level program. You can’t flash new programs to F&P machines from the consumer side. Stick to pre-soaking before starting the cycle.
Will the FP426515 lid switch fit my WL1064G1?
No — FP426515 fits the older GW/MW/IW series. The WL1064G1 uses a different lock assembly. Run your exact model through the Part Finder to match.
My machine is on rainwater tank — any way to top up mid-cycle without breaking the lid?
For the modern WL series with the all-cycle lock, no. Either pre-fill before starting, OR install a separate inlet T-piece that lets you manually top up the supply line from the tank during the cycle (plumber job, but a one-time install).
