Quick answer: A Whirlpool washer that won’t drain almost always comes down to a blocked pump filter or hose (free to clear) or a failed drain pump. If the machine hums but no water moves, or it’s silent when it should be pumping out, the pump has died. A replacement Whirlpool drain pump is $39.95 for most WFS and AWO front loaders and $22.95 for the direct-drive top loaders, and it’s a 45-minute DIY job on most machines.

Match the symptom to the fault
| What you see | What you hear | Most likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| Water sitting in the drum at the end of the cycle | Nothing when it should be pumping out | Failed drain pump |
| Drains very slowly, clothes come out soaked | Normal pump noise, weak flow | Blocked filter, coin trap or kinked hose |
| Stops mid-cycle with a drain fault on the panel | A hum or buzz, no water moving | Jammed or burnt-out pump |
| Drains fine, then stops mid-cycle | Rattling during the drain | Coin or bra wire in the pump chamber |
Why Whirlpool washers stop draining
Whirlpool sold two very different machines in Australia, and they fail differently:
- WFS-series and AWO front loaders drain through a small electric pump at the bottom front of the machine, behind the kick panel. Lint, coins and debris funnel into the filter trap on the front of the pump. The trap clogs (free fix) or the pump wears out and hums without moving water.
- Direct-drive top loaders use a pump driven off the motor. When it cracks, jams or the impeller strips, the machine finishes the wash but the water stays put. The pump is a $22.95 part that clips onto the front of the motor.
Confirm the fault in five minutes
- Switch off at the wall and unplug. There will be water — lay towels down and have a shallow tray ready.
- Front loaders: open the kick panel and slowly unscrew the round filter cap. Let the water drain into the tray, then clear lint, coins and anything else from the trap.
- Spin the impeller. With the filter out, flick the small plastic impeller inside the opening. It should turn freely with slight notchy resistance. Jammed solid, wobbly, or spinning with no resistance at all points to a dead pump.
- Check the drain hose for kinks behind the machine and blockages where it enters the standpipe.
- Top loaders: tip the machine back (with help) and check the pump on the front of the motor for cracks, leaks or a seized impeller.
- Test a drain-and-spin cycle. If the machine still won’t pump out with a clear filter and a free hose, the pump is your part.

Not sure which one fits? Your model number is on the model sticker inside the door opening on front loaders, or under the lid on top loaders — run it through the Part Finder for the exact-fit pump.
Replacing the pump, step by step
- Unplug the machine and drain it via the filter cap as above.
- On front loaders, tilt the machine back or lay it gently on its side on a blanket — the pump is reached from underneath or behind the kick panel. On top loaders, the pump is on the front of the motor, reached through the cabinet.
- Photograph the wiring, then unclip the electrical connector from the pump (front loaders) or the retaining clips (direct-drive top loaders).
- Release the hose clamps on the sump hose and drain hose, and free the pump from its mounting screws, bayonet fitting or motor clips.
- Fit the new pump in reverse order, making sure the hose clamps seat properly.
- Stand the machine up, run a short rinse-and-spin, and check underneath for leaks.
Allow about 45 minutes with basic hand tools.
Repair cost summary (Australia 2026)
| Fix | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Clear the pump filter or hose yourself | $0 | 10 minutes |
| New drain pump (DIY) | $22.95–$49.95 | about 45 minutes |

| New washing machine | $800–$2,000 | — |
The 50% rule: a drain pump is one of the cheapest parts on the machine. On any Whirlpool washer that’s otherwise sound, replacing the pump is always worth it — the part is a fraction of the cost of a new machine.
Frequently asked questions
My Whirlpool washing machine hums but won’t drain — what does that mean?
The pump motor is getting power but the impeller can’t move water — either something is jammed in the chamber or the pump has failed. Clear the filter first; if it still hums with a clear trap, replace the pump.
Is it the pump or the hose?
If the machine drains slowly but does drain, check the hose and trap first. If it won’t drain at all, or is silent or humming when it should be pumping, it’s the pump.
Do Whirlpool top loaders have a pump filter I can clean?
The direct-drive top loaders don’t have a user-accessible trap like a front loader — blockages sit in the pump itself or the hoses, which is why a jammed sock so often means pulling the pump off the motor. The good news: it’s two clips and it costs $22.95 to replace outright.
Where is my Whirlpool model number?
On the model sticker just inside the door opening on front loaders (WFS, AWO or FSCR models), or under the lid on top loaders. Enter it in the Part Finder for the exact-fit pump.
