You press start. The machine fills like it always does. The pump kicks in and drains on cue. The cycle even counts down and beeps done. Then you open the lid and the clothes are exactly where you dropped them — sodden, untouched, never spun. The drum hasn’t moved all cycle.
That split personality — electronics alive, drum dead — is the signature of worn carbon brushes on a machine with a brushed universal motor. The board is doing its job. The valves and pump are doing theirs. The motor is getting the command to turn and simply can’t answer, because the carbon blocks that carry power into it have worn away.
Other tells that point the same way:
- The drum turned weakly or intermittently for a few weeks before stopping altogether.
- Sparks flickering under the machine during a spin, easiest to spot with the laundry light off.

How carbon brushes work — and why they were always going to wear out
A brushed universal motor drives the drum through a belt. Power gets into the spinning heart of the motor — the armature — through two blocks of carbon, each pressed by a small spring against a ring of copper segments called the commutator. Thousands of rotations per wash, every wash, for years. The carbon is deliberately softer than the copper, so the cheap replaceable block wears instead of the expensive motor.
Eventually the block wears so short the spring can’t push it onto the copper any more. Contact breaks and the motor goes silent. It isn’t a defect; it’s a service item, like brake pads. The engineers knew this day was coming — that’s why on most motors the brushes come out with two screws.
The sparks and the smell fit the same story. As a brush gets short, spring pressure drops and contact turns patchy. Electricity jumps the gap — arcing — which is the flicker you see under the machine and the hot smell you catch after a cycle. That’s the brushes announcing the end of their run.

Confirm it before you buy: three checks, ten minutes
Unplug the machine at the wall first. Every check below is done with the power off.
- Spin the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly and freely. Grinding, rumbling or a drum that flops on its shaft is a different job — read whether a drum overhaul kit is worth it before spending a dollar.
- Check the belt. Back panel off — usually four to six screws. Belt intact and snug on both pulleys? Keep going.
- Pull a brush and look at it. The brush holders sit on either side of the motor body, held by a screw or a quarter-turn cap. Slide one out. New brushes carry a few centimetres of carbon; once it’s worn to a stub — much under a centimetre — you’ve found your fault. While you’re there, sight the commutator through the opening: the copper should be shiny, not deeply grooved or blackened.
Match the brush to the motor, not the badge on the lid
Carbon brushes are motor-specific. The block’s width and thickness, the holder, the spring and the terminal all have to match — a brush a millimetre too wide jams in its channel, a millimetre too narrow rattles and arcs. The safe path is the model number on the model sticker: under the lid or on the rear panel of a top loader, around the door rim or on the back of a front loader.

The swap: one screwdriver, about an hour
This is one of the friendlier jobs in washer repair: the machine stays unplugged the whole time, no plumbing is opened, and nothing needs recalibrating afterwards. Take it steady and photograph each step.
- Unplug at the wall. If you’re pulling the machine out, turn the taps off too — no drama if a hose weeps.
- Remove the back panel. Some top loaders give better access tilted forward against a wall — get a second pair of hands.
- Find the motor: low at the back, under the drum, with the belt running up to the big pulley.
- Photograph the wiring, then unclip the terminal on the first brush holder.
- Unscrew the holder and slide the old brush out. Note the angle worn onto the carbon face — the new one will bed in to match.
- Fit the new brush, seat the spring, refit the holder and terminal. Repeat on the other side — always both, even if one looks better.
- Refit the panel, plug in and run a short empty cycle. A whiff of new-brush smell and a little extra motor noise for the first few loads is normal while the fresh carbon beds into the commutator.
Two honest stop signs: melted or burnt terminals, wiring or brush holders, or a deeply scored commutator. Either one means put the panel back on and call a repairer — you may be into motor territory, and that’s worth a professional opinion before you buy more parts.
