Quick answer: Water behind the washing machine after every spin usually means a split outlet drain hose, most often at the hook or a tight bend. Water at the front after you drain the filter usually means the drain hose cap is cracked or missing. Find the leak with dry paper towel, then match the model number on the sticker to a brand or universal hose. Hoses and caps are stocked in Australia and dispatched from Sydney the day you order when it’s in by 12pm Sydney time.

Find the leak in five minutes
- Unplug the machine and turn the taps off, then walk it out from the wall corner by corner.
- Dry the floor and lay dry paper towel along the whole hose run, under the back of the cabinet and under the front.
- Plug it back in, run a short rinse and spin with the panels on, and keep your hands clear while it runs.
- The first sheet to get wet is your answer.
Wet along the hose at the hook or a bend: the outlet hose. Wet where the hose leaves the cabinet: often a loose clamp at the pump spigot inside. Standpipe overflowing while the hose stays dry: a blocked standpipe, which is plumbing, not a hose. Wet underneath with the outlet hose dry: an internal hose or the pump. The washing machine leaking from underneath guide maps every location.
Outlet hose basics: length, hook, 22 mm ends and clamps
- Length. The Simpson, Electrolux Westinghouse Hoover, Whirlpool and universal listings are 2 metre hoses. Measure the run to your tub or standpipe before you order.
- The hook. The U-shaped guide on the end holds the hose over the tub or in the standpipe. Tie it off so a hard pump-out can’t flick it onto the floor.
- The 22 mm end. The 90-degree hose has a 22 mm end. Compare it with your old hose before ordering.
- Clamps. Refit the clamp at the pump spigot past the ridge, and check it isn’t biting into the new hose.
Siphoning. Push the hose deep into a standpipe and seal it airtight, or let the end sit too low, and water can siphon out of the drum mid-wash. The machine keeps filling or throws a fill fault. Leave an air gap around the hose and keep the hook at the height your manual gives, usually somewhere around 60 cm to 1 m; check yours.
Don’t glue or tape a split hose. The hose flexes every spin, tape lifts, and the leak returns behind the machine where you can’t see it.
Hose too short after a move? Extension kits aren’t listed in stock today, and a joint is one more place to leak. A longer brand hose or the universal 2 metre hose is the in-stock route; send the model number if you’re unsure it will reach.
Internal hoses: tub-to-pump and bellows
Inside the cabinet, a short rubber hose joins the bottom of the tub to the pump. On older LG front loaders that hose is a ribbed bellows, and another bellows runs from the detergent dispenser to the tub. They perish and crack at the folds with age. The sign is water under the machine while the outlet hose stays dry; a dispenser-side leak shows up while the machine fills, and for LG there’s the LG washing machine Dispenser to Tub Bellows Hose. Internal hoses are model-specific, so match the listing title. If the pump itself is weeping, see which drain pump fits and the drain pump replacement guide.
Draining slowly too? A kinked hose can do it, but check the filter and pump as well. Start with the not draining fix for every brand, or the Samsung, Fisher & Paykel and LG not draining guides. Fisher & Paykel owners should also read the Fisher & Paykel pump filter clean.
How to match your model
The model sticker is inside the door rim or on the back panel of a front loader, and under the lid or on the back of a top loader. Search the model on the site, check the Samsung model pages, or browse Samsung parts and the full washing machine parts store.
Brand hose or universal? If your old hose has a moulded elbow, a clip-in bracket or a shaped end, buy the hose listed for your model. A universal 2 metre hose usually suits a hose that pushes onto a round spigot with a clamp and hooks over a tub or standpipe. Stirling owners have the STIRLING WASHING MACHINE WATER DRAIN HOSE OUTLET 90 Deg 22mm, and the shared 90-degree drain hose guide explains that family. Lost cap on another front loader? Try the Universal Front loader Washing Machine Drain Hose Cap. Not sure? Send the model number via the contact page and we’ll check before you order.
DIY or repairer?
Outlet hoses and caps are DIY. Taps off, machine unplugged, and drain the filter into a shallow tray first, because the machine still holds water. On many machines the back panel or kickplate comes off to reach the clamp at the pump. Internal hoses mean the front or back panel comes off, so photograph the clamps first. Outlet hoses and caps run roughly $12–36 and internal hoses $18–30, while a call-out typically runs $100–165 before parts. Call a repairer if the leak is the tub seal behind the drum, or the machine trips the safety switch: water and 240V don’t mix.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a leaking washing machine drain hose?
Find the split with dry paper towel during a short spin, then replace the hose rather than taping it. Unplug the machine, turn off the taps, drain the filter into a tray, release the clamp at the pump spigot, often behind the back panel or kickplate, and fit the new hose the same way.
Are washing machine drain hoses universal?
Many are close to it, but not all. A universal 2 metre hose usually suits a round push-on spigot with a clamp. Hoses with moulded elbows, clips or shaped ends need the brand hose listed for your model number.
What is the cap on the little hose at the front of my washing machine?
On many front loaders a thin emergency drain hose sits behind the filter flap, closed with a cap. If water appears at the front after you drain the filter, the cap is usually cracked, missing or not pushed fully home.
Can I extend my washing machine drain hose?
Extension kits aren’t listed in stock today, and every joint adds a leak point. A longer brand hose or the universal 2 metre hose is the in-stock route. Measure the run first, and send us the model number if you’re unsure.
Why does my washing machine drain while it’s filling?
That’s often siphoning: the hose end sits too low, or it’s sealed airtight in the standpipe. Leave an air gap around the hose and keep the hook at the height your manual gives, often somewhere around 60 cm to 1 m.
Which Samsung washing machine drain hose do I need?
There are two Samsung listings: a genuine drain hose and a replacement outlet hose. Read the model number off the sticker inside the door rim or on the back panel, match it to the listing, or send it to us to check.
Read the model number off the sticker, search it on the site, or send it through the contact page and we’ll check the hose before you order. Outlet hoses, caps and internal hoses are dispatched from Sydney’s Northern Beaches the day you order when it’s in by 12pm Sydney time.
