Quick answer: A Samsung washer that won’t fill — or fills to a trickle — is nearly always a water inlet valve problem. Check the taps, hoses and the little filter screens where the hoses meet the machine first (free), then replace the valve: Samsung inlet valves run $15.95–$68.95 and swap over in about 30 minutes. If the machine fills forever or barely at all with good water flow, suspect the pressure sensor ($35.95) instead.
Find the right Samsung part by model number — or start at the complete Samsung washing machine repair guide. Seeing 4E or 4C on the display? That is Samsung’s water supply error — go straight to the 4E error guide or the 4C error guide.
Match the symptom to the cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | Cost to fix |
|---|---|---|
| No water at all, 4E or 4C on the display | Tap off, kinked hose, blocked inlet screens — then the inlet valve | $0–$68.95 |
| Fills painfully slowly | Blocked filter screens or a tired inlet valve coil | $0–$68.95 |
| Cold wash fills, warm wash doesn’t (or vice versa) | One valve of a hot/cold pair has failed | $15.95–$29.95 |
| Fills, stops, fills again, never settles | Pressure sensor misreading the water level | $35.95 |
| Water keeps creeping in with the machine off | Inlet valve jammed open — replace it promptly | $15.95–$68.95 |
Step 1: The free checks (five minutes)
Turn both taps fully on and feel the hoses for kinks — a wardrobe pushed against the wall is a classic culprit. Then unscrew the inlet hoses at the machine end and inspect the small mesh screens just inside the valve inlets. In most of Sydney and anywhere on tank water, these screens silt up with grit and scale until the machine starves. Rinse them clean, refit, and test. Our inlet valve test and replace how-to shows each step.
Step 2: Confirm the valve has failed
With good pressure at the hose and clean screens, start a fill and listen at the back of the machine. A healthy valve clicks and hums as it opens. Silence — or a hum with no water — means the electromagnetic coil has died, and no amount of cleaning revives it. On dual-valve machines a single dead coil explains why only the warm or only the cold cycle misbehaves.
Step 3: Fit the right Samsung inlet valve
| Your machine | Part | Price |
|---|---|---|
Front loaders, hot side (many WF/WW models) | Samsung hot water inlet valve DC62-30314N | $29.95 |
J845–J1455 and WF7700/WF8750/WF8802 front loaders | Samsung double dual inlet valve DC62-00024F | $16.85 |
WA65–WA80 top loaders (cold) | Samsung top loader inlet valve for WA65F5S2URW–WA80F5G4 | $21.80 |
WA75/WA80 top loaders (genuine assembly) | Samsung inlet valve for WA75F5S6DRA and WA80F5G4DJW | $57.65 |
WA65–WA80 series (genuine multi-outlet) | Samsung inlet valve DC97-17798A | $68.95 |
Older SW top loaders | Samsung inlet valve for SW50USP–SW62ASP | $15.95 |
The swap is genuinely easy: unplug the machine, turn off the taps, remove the top or rear panel, photograph the wiring, pull the spade connectors and hose clamps, and screw the new valve in. Match the part to the letters and numbers on your model sticker — or run your model through the Part Finder and skip the guesswork.
Step 4: Still misbehaving? Check the pressure sensor
If water flows freely but the machine fills in fits and starts, overfills, or gives up mid-fill, the Samsung water level pressure sensor ($35.95) is misreading the level. Also check the clear pressure hose running down to the tub — a split or blocked hose gives the same symptoms for free.
Repair cost vs a service call (Australia 2026)
| Option | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Clean the inlet screens and hoses yourself | $0 |
| DIY inlet valve | $15.95–$68.95 |
| DIY pressure sensor | $35.95 |
| Repairer callout plus the same part and labour | commonly $180–$300 |
| New Samsung washer | $700–$1,600 |
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Samsung washing machine not filling with water?
In order of likelihood: a tap not fully open or a kinked hose, blocked mesh screens at the valve inlets, then a failed water inlet valve. The free checks take five minutes; the valve is a $15.95–$68.95 part.
What does the 4E or 4C error mean on a Samsung?
Both are water supply errors — the machine asked for water and didn’t get enough within the time limit. Same diagnosis path: taps, hoses, screens, then the inlet valve.
Only the warm or hot wash won’t fill. Why?
Twin-valve Samsungs use separate coils for hot and cold. One coil failing kills only that supply — replace the valve and both sides come back.
How do I find my Samsung model number?
On the model sticker around the door opening (front loaders) or under the lid (top loaders). Enter it in the Part Finder for the exact-fit valve.
