Confirm the belt is the problem
A failed drive belt has a clean signature, and reading it takes five minutes:
- The drum freewheels by hand. Power off, door open, spin the drum. On a belt-driven Samsung you normally feel the drag of the motor being turned through the belt; a drum that spins on and on with no resistance has lost its connection to the motor.
- The motor runs but nothing moves. During the cycle you hear the motor spin up behind the machine — sometimes quite fast — while the drum sits still and the clothes stay put.
- Rubber dust or fragments under the machine. A belt that has shredded rather than snapped cleanly leaves black debris below the rear panel.
- The load comes out saturated and unmoved, in the same position it went in.

Two notes on reading the table. First, a few codes appear in more than one row — WW85T554DAW is the obvious one. Replacing the belt
- Unplug the machine and turn off the taps. If your model has ever appeared in a recall notice, check it against the register at Product Safety Australia before opening it up.
- Pull the machine out of its alcove and remove the rear panel — a ring of screws around the edge.
- You will see the large drum pulley and, below it, the small motor pulley. Recover every piece of the old belt, including fragments that have dropped into the base of the cabinet.
- Loop the new belt over the motor pulley first, then hook it onto the top of the drum pulley and rotate the pulley slowly by hand so the belt walks on — the same motion as refitting a bicycle chain. These are stretch-fit belts: there is no tensioner to release and no adjustment to make.
- Check the belt sits centred on both pulleys with the ribbed side seated in the grooves, then turn two full rotations to confirm it tracks straight.
- Refit the panel, push the machine back, and run a rinse-and-spin cycle empty.

Why the belt let go
Age is the usual answer — rubber hardens, glazes where it slips, and eventually cracks across the ribs. But treat a shredded or repeatedly thrown belt as a symptom until proven otherwise:
- Overloading. A drum packed with a wet doona or a full family load makes the belt slip on every spin-up, and slip is what burns belts.
- Worn drum bearings. With the belt off, spin the drum pulley: grinding or rumble means bearing wear. Grip the drum lip inside the machine and lift — noticeable movement says the same thing. A new belt over failing bearings will not last.
- A damaged pulley. Watch the drum pulley’s rim as it turns; chips, cracks or a visible wobble will throw a new belt the same way they threw the old one.
Do it yourself or call a tradie?
- For doing it yourself: the access is one panel, nothing electrical is disturbed, and a stretch-fit belt removes the tension-setting guesswork older machines needed.
- Against: the machine has to come right out, which is heavy and awkward in a tight laundry, and misdiagnosis is common — a belt fitted over worn bearings fixes nothing.
- Call a tradie if the bearing checks above fail, if the motor never runs at all, or if error codes persist after the repair. Bearing replacement on a front loader is a full teardown, and it is fair to weigh that quote against replacing the machine.

How tight should the new belt be?
You do not set the tension — a stretch-fit belt arrives at it by being the correct belt. If it slides on easily and hangs slack, it is the wrong belt; if it tracks off-centre or walks off during the test spin, check the pulley before blaming the part.
Can I fit a belt from a different Samsung model if it looks the same length?
No. Near-enough belts stretch on, run for a few loads and then walk off the pulley or squeal under load. Match the model code in the table, and if yours is not there, ask first.
