Quick answer: Miele washing machines show F-codes and plain-text messages. The ones owners see most are F11 (drain fault: filter, pump or hose), F12 and F13 (water intake: tap, hose or inlet valve), F20 (water not heating: element or sensor), F34 and F35 (door lock), F53 (motor speed sensor) and F63 (water path). Clean the filter, check the tap and hose, then power-cycle; a code that returns points at the part named below.

A Miele washing machine does not simply stop. The control unit watches the fill, the drain, the door lock, the heater and the motor on every cycle, and when a check fails it shows an F-code or a short message such as Check drain, Water intake or Technical fault. That code tells you which circuit failed, which is the difference between a five-minute filter clean and an unnecessary service call.
This guide covers the fault codes documented across Miele’s W-series and W1 front loaders sold in Australia, from the older W-3000 and W-5000 machines through the current WCA, WCD, WCG, WCI, WCR, WEG, WWD and WWV models. For each code you get the plain-English meaning, the most likely cause and the part or check that clears it. Miele machines are worth repairing: the platform is built for twenty years, the parts are modular, and most of the common faults are a filter, a hose, a valve or a pump.
Miele washing machine error codes: quick-reference table
Codes are listed as they appear on the display. Where two generations of the platform use different codes for the same fault, both are shown. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model before ordering a part.
| Code | What it means | Most likely cause | What to do / the part |
|---|---|---|---|
| F11 | Drain fault: water not pumped out in the allowed time | Blocked drain filter, coin or hair in the pump, kinked or blocked drain hose, drain pump failed | Clean the filter behind the lower flap, check the hose and standpipe, then run a drain-and-spin; if it returns, fit a new drain pump |
| F12 / F13 | Water intake fault at the start of the program (F12) or during it (F13) | Tap not fully open, inlet hose kinked, blocked inlet screen, inlet valve failed, low water pressure | Open the tap, straighten the hose, clean the screen in the hose end; if the machine still will not fill, replace the inlet valve |
| F15 | Hot water intake fault (hot-fill models) | Hot tap off or hot inlet hose restricted | Check the hot tap and hose; if the machine has no hot connection, this points to the intake valve or its wiring |
| F16 | Excess foam detected | Too much detergent, wrong detergent for the water hardness or load | Run a rinse with no detergent, then use less. This code clears itself once the foam is gone |
| F19 | Flow meter fault: water arrives too slowly or the flow meter is not counting | Very low water pressure, partly blocked inlet screen, flow meter failed | Clean the inlet screen and check pressure at the tap; a flow meter that no longer counts is a service part |
| F20 | Heating fault: water did not reach temperature in the allowed time | Heater element failed, temperature sensor out of range, heater relay on the board | Check the element for continuity; replace the element or the NTC sensor; if both test fine the fault is on the electronic unit |
| F34 | Door lock fault: the lock did not engage | Door not fully closed, laundry trapped in the seal, door lock worn | Close the door firmly and restart; if it returns every time, replace the door lock |
| F35 | Door will not open at the end of the program | Door lock stuck, water still in the drum, lock electronics | Run a drain program first; if the door still will not release, the lock needs replacing |
| F39 | Fault in the electronic unit | Electronic unit or its programming | Power off at the wall for a minute, then retry; if the code returns it is a service repair |
| F41 | EEPROM (memory) fault | Corrupt data on the electronic unit | Power-cycle once; a repeat means the electronic unit needs reprogramming or replacement |
| F43 / F45 / F46 | Model type not programmed (F43), control unit fault (F45), display fault (F46) | Electronic unit or display module | Service repair: these need Miele’s programming tool |
| F47 / F49 | Communication fault between the modules (BAE/SLT interface, F47) or the electronic units (F49) | Loose interconnect plug, moisture on the connector, module failure | Power off, check the connectors for corrosion, retry; a persistent code is a board fault |
| F50 | Drive fault: the motor did not reach the commanded speed | Worn carbon brushes on brush motors, motor inverter fault, motor wiring | Replace the carbon brushes on a brush motor; on brushless machines this is the inverter or motor |
| F51 | Pressure sensor (water level) fault | Blocked pressure hose or chamber, sensor failed | Clear the pressure hose of sludge; replace the level sensor if it still faults |
| F53 | Speed sensor (tacho) fault | Tacho coil on the motor loose or failed, motor wiring | Reseat the tacho on the motor shaft; replace it if the reading is open-circuit |
| F55 | Program overrun: the cycle took longer than the maximum time | Slow fill, slow drain, repeated rebalancing, heating slow | Fix the underlying slow step: filter, inlet screen, or heater |
| F56 | Final spin speed under 400 rpm | Unbalanced load, worn suspension, motor speed fault | Redistribute the load and retry; if every load does it, check the shock absorbers and the tacho |
| F63 | Water path fault | Water switching unit (diverter) not moving or not reporting position | The water path control is a service part; a power-cycle occasionally clears a stuck position |
F70 | Waterproof system activated: water in the base | Leak from a hose, the seal, the detergent drawer or the tub | Turn off the tap, unplug, dry the base and find the leak before running it again — fit the Hisense Washing Machine Door Seal HCF7S1014B/BX HWF9S1214BX |
| Waterproof / Check drain / Water intake / Technical fault (text) | Plain-text versions of F70, F11, F12 and the electronics faults on newer W1 displays | As above | Treat each message as its F-code equivalent in this table |
Which Miele washing machine codes clear with a power cycle?
Codes caused by a one-off event clear on a restart and stay cleared: F16 once the foam is gone, F34 after the door is closed properly, F41 and F39 on the odd occasion the electronics glitched on a power dip. To reset, switch the machine off at its own button, turn it off at the wall for one full minute, then restart the program.
Codes caused by a failed part come straight back: F11 the moment the machine tries to drain, F12 when it calls for water, F20 as soon as it should be heating, F53 and F50 when the motor is asked to turn. A code that returns on the first attempt is a diagnosis, not a glitch, and the part column above tells you where to look.
F11 and F12: the two faults you can almost always fix yourself
F11 is the most common Miele fault by a wide margin, and in most homes it is not the pump. Pull the lower flap off, put a towel down, unscrew the drain filter and clear the coins, hair grips and lint. Check the drain hose is not kinked behind the machine and not pushed more than about 150 mm into the standpipe. Then run a drain and spin. Only when the filter is clean, the hose is clear and the pump still hums without moving water is the pump itself finished.
F12 follows the same rule from the other side. Nine times in ten the tap is not fully open, the inlet hose has a kink, or the little screen in the hose end has silted up. Clean the screen under a tap. If the machine still cannot fill with the tap wide open and a clean screen, the inlet valve coil has failed, and that is a plug-in part.
F20, F53 and F50: the faults that need a part, not a reset
F20 means the water did not heat. On a Miele the heater element sits at the bottom of the tub behind the front panel and is checked with a multimeter for continuity; an open element is replaced as an assembly with its seal. If the element reads fine, the temperature sensor next to it is the next suspect. F53 is the speed sensor on the end of the motor: it is a small coil that occasionally works loose, and reseating it clears the code more often than replacing it. F50 on an older brush motor is usually the carbon brushes, which wear to nothing after ten to fifteen years and are a cheap, quick swap.

Is it safe to fix an error code yourself?
Most of the codes above are cleared with a filter clean, a hose check or a plug-in part swap, and those are ordinary DIY jobs: unplug the machine, photograph the wiring before you unplug anything, and never bypass a door lock or a thermal cut-out. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, gas, or a mains-side repair belongs with a licensed repairer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset a Miele washing machine error code?
Switch the machine off at its own power button, then off at the wall for one full minute, then back on and restart the program. If the same code returns immediately, the fault is real and the table above names the part to check.
What does F11 mean on a Miele washing machine?
F11 is a drain fault: the water was not pumped out in the allowed time. Clean the drain filter behind the lower flap, check the drain hose for kinks, and run a drain program. If the pump hums without moving water after that, replace the drain pump.
Why does my Miele show Water intake or F12?
The machine asked for water and did not get enough. Check the tap is fully open, the inlet hose is straight, and the screen in the hose end is clean. If it still will not fill, the inlet valve has failed.
Is F53 on a Miele expensive to fix?
Usually not. F53 is the speed sensor on the motor, a small coil that can work loose. Reseating it fixes many cases; a replacement sensor is inexpensive compared with a call-out.
Can I keep using the machine with F70 or Waterproof showing?
No. F70 means water has collected in the base. Turn off the tap, unplug the machine, dry the base and find the leak before running it again. The float switch will keep triggering until the base is dry.
Where is the model number on a Miele washing machine?
Open the door and look at the sticker on the inside of the door rim or on the frame, where you will find a model such as WCA020, WWD120 or W3725. Use that code to match parts, or run it through our Part Finder.
