Quick answer: A Westinghouse washing machine door lock (door interlock switch) holds the door shut while the drum turns and tells the control board it is safe to start. The first sign of failure is usually this: the machine is dead after you shut the door: no click, no lights changing, nothing starts. Replacement door locks for Westinghouse washing machines run about $20–50; a door lock is a modest part and a fast job. Match the full model number on your Westinghouse sticker (EW1080F, EW1280F, EW550F, EW560F and more) against the listing title before you order.

What the door lock does on a Westinghouse washing machine
The door lock holds the door shut while the drum turns and tells the control board it is safe to start. On Westinghouse washing machines sold in Australia the same part is shared across model families, which is why one listing covers several model numbers, and why two door locks that look alike are not interchangeable: the mounting, the plug and the signal differ between families. The full model number on your sticker settles it.
Isolate the machine at the wall before you touch anything behind the front panel. If the machine is hard-wired rather than plugged in, that is a job for a licensed repairer.
Symptoms of a failed Westinghouse door lock
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| The machine is dead after you shut the door: no click, no lights changing, nothing starts | The interlock is not closing its contacts, so the board never gets the go signal |
| The door stays locked long after the cycle has finished | The lock's heating element or solenoid is stuck; a few minutes is normal, twenty is not |
| The cycle stops part way with a door error on the display | The lock lost contact mid-cycle, often a cracked housing or burnt contact |
| The door closes but feels loose, rattles, or needs a shove to click | Worn latch or striker putting sideways load on the lock pin; the lock usually follows |
Is it really the door lock?
Before you order, rule out the two look-alikes. A machine that is dead with the door open as well as shut is a power or board problem, not the lock. A machine that fills and then stops with water still inside is more often a drain problem: the lock will not release while the drum holds water. Drain it first and the door usually opens.
Where is the model sticker on a Westinghouse washing machine
Front loader: open the door and check the surround, usually near the 3 or 9 o'clock position. Top loader: lift the lid and check the rim of the tub opening or the underside of the lid itself. Write the full code down, letters and numbers, or photograph it: the suffix matters, and the badge on the front of the machine is not enough. Our Westinghouse model number guide has photos of each spot.
Which Westinghouse door lock is listed for your model
One row per model number as it appears on the sticker. The part column is the listing title, which names every model that listing covers. Westinghouse shares platforms with Electrolux, so some listings carry that name; the model numbers are what count.

Replacing the door lock: the job in order
- Switch the machine off at the wall and pull the plug. Wait a minute for the lock to release.
- Open the door and fold the rubber door seal back from the front panel at the lock side. On most front loaders a wire band or spring clip holds the outer lip; ease it off and tuck the seal into the drum.
- Undo the two screws that hold the lock to the front panel through the latch opening.
- Reach behind the panel, draw the lock out, and photograph the plug before you unclip it. Some locks have two plugs.
- Clip the plugs onto the new lock, feed it back, and install the two screws. Reinstall the seal lip and the band.
- Plug in, shut the door and listen for the click. Run a short rinse and spin with the door shut and an empty drum before you trust it with a load.
DIY or a repairer?
For most people this is a DIY job: a door lock is a modest part and a fast job. A repairer’s call-out in Australia is in the $100–165 band before the part, so the saving is the labour. Use a licensed repairer if the appliance is hard-wired, if you find burnt or melted wiring, if gas or sealed refrigerant is involved, or if the new part does not cure the fault, because the next suspect is usually the control board and that is fitted after diagnosis, not before.
Frequently asked questions
The drum is full of water and the door will not open. What do I do?
Drain it first. Pull the plug, open the small flap at the bottom front, put towels and a shallow tray down, and ease the drain filter open so the water comes out slowly. Once the drum is empty and the machine has been unplugged for a few minutes the lock releases. A machine that is full of water at the end of a cycle usually has a pump or filter problem rather than a lock problem, so check the filter before you order anything.
Why does the door stay locked for a minute or two after the cycle ends?
That is normal. Most locks hold the door until a small heating element cools or the board confirms the drum has stopped. Worry when the wait runs past ten minutes with an empty, stationary drum.
Can I bypass the lock so I can keep washing while I wait for the part?
No. The lock is the only thing between an open door and a drum at full spin, and most boards will not run the motor without its signal anyway. Install the correct part.
Do I need a repairer for this job?
Most door locks are two screws and a plug, which is why it is one of the most common first repairs. If the machine is hard-wired, if the wiring behind the panel looks burnt, or if the lock is fine but the machine still will not start, stop and call a repairer.
The lock looks identical to one listed for a different model. Can I use it?
Do not match by eye. Locks that look the same differ in pin position, plug layout and the signal they send, and a near match leaves you with a door that latches but never locks. Match the full model number on your sticker against the listing title.
