Quick answer: Error E4 on a Haier washing machine means a drain fault — the machine cannot pump the water out within the allotted time. In most cases the cause is a blocked pump filter or a kinked drain hose, both free to fix in under fifteen minutes. If the filter and hose are clear and E4 returns, the drain pump has failed. A replacement Haier drain pump costs $49.95–$64.95 and is a 30–45 minute DIY job.

What the Haier E4 code means
E4 is Haier’s drain error. At the end of a wash or rinse phase the control board starts the drain pump and monitors the water level via the pressure sensor. If the level has not dropped within the programmed drain time, the cycle stops and E4 is displayed. It is the most commonly reported Haier washing machine fault code in Australia.
Haier fault codes can vary between model series, so always confirm your exact model number on the model sticker — inside the door frame on front loaders, inside the lid or on the rear panel on top loaders. The full code list is in our Haier washing machine error codes guide.
Common causes of Haier E4
| Cause | Likelihood | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pump filter blocked with lint, coins or debris | Very common | Clean the filter — free |
| Drain hose kinked, crushed or too high | Common | Reposition hose — free |
| Blocked sink waste or standpipe connection | Moderate | Clear the plumbing connection — free |
| Object jamming the pump impeller | Moderate | Remove obstruction via the filter opening — free |
| Drain pump failed electrically | Moderate | Replace drain pump — $49.95–$64.95 |
| Pressure sensor fault (level reads high when empty) | Less common | Replace pressure sensor |
How to fix the Haier E4 error — step by step
- Unplug the machine. If the drum still holds water, be ready with towels and a shallow tray.
- Clean the pump filter. On Haier front loaders the filter is behind a small panel at the lower front. Place a tray beneath it, open the cap slowly to let residual water drain, then remove the filter. Clear any lint, coins, hair ties or bra wires, rinse and refit firmly.
- Check the pump impeller. With the filter out, shine a torch into the pump chamber and turn the impeller with a finger. It should turn in small ratchet-like steps. If it is jammed solid, remove the obstruction.
- Check the drain hose. Confirm the hose is not kinked behind the machine and that the outlet is between 60 and 100 cm above floor level. Check the sink waste spigot is not blocked.
- Run a rinse-and-spin cycle. If E4 returns with a clear filter and hose, listen during the drain phase. Silence, or a faint hum with no water movement, means the pump has failed — replace it.
Tip: Haier top loaders (HWT and HWMP series) also use E4 for drain faults. On these models the drain pump is accessed from the rear or base panel rather than a front filter flap — but the diagnostic order is identical: hose first, then pump.

How to replace a Haier drain pump (30–45 minutes)
- Unplug the machine and turn off the taps. Drain residual water via the filter cap.
- Tilt the machine back or lay it gently on its side on a towel — on most Haier front loaders the pump is accessed through the open base.
- Photograph the wiring and hose positions on the pump before disconnecting anything.
- Release the hose clamps and pull the sump hose and drain hose off the pump body — expect some water.
- Unplug the electrical connector and remove the mounting screws (usually two or three).
- Fit the new pump, reconnect hoses, clamps and wiring, and stand the machine upright.
- Run a rinse-and-spin cycle and watch the filter cap and hose joints for leaks.
Frequently asked questions
Does Haier E4 always mean the drain pump is broken?
No. A blocked pump filter is the most frequent cause and is free to fix. Only replace the pump after the filter, impeller and hose have been checked and cleared.
My Haier stops mid-cycle full of water with E4 — how do I empty it?
Unplug the machine, open the filter flap at the lower front, and drain into a shallow tray using the small emergency drain tube (if fitted) or by cracking the filter cap slowly.
The pump hums but the water does not move — filter or pump?
A hum usually means the motor is energised but the impeller is jammed or stripped. Check the impeller through the filter opening first; if it spins freely by hand but does not pump, replace the pump.
Where is the model number on my Haier washing machine?
On front loaders it is on the model sticker inside the door frame. On top loaders it is inside the lid or on the rear panel.
