Quick answer: A LG fridge fan motor (evaporator or condenser fan motor) moves cold air from the evaporator through the freezer and fridge compartments. The first sign of failure is usually this: the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm. Replacement fan motors for LG fridges run about $20–80; a fan motor is a modest part and the fix is an hour with a screwdriver. Match the full model number on your LG sticker (0535A, 13VDC, 1920RPM, DC12V and more) against the listing title before you order.

What the fan motor does on a LG fridge
The fan motor moves cold air from the evaporator through the freezer and fridge compartments. On LG fridges sold in Australia the same part is shared across model families, which is why one listing covers several model numbers, and why two fan motors that look alike are not interchangeable: the mounting, the plug and the signal differ between families. The full model number on your sticker settles it.
Switch the fridge off at the wall before you remove the back panel. Never pierce the evaporator; refrigerant work is for a licensed person.
Symptoms of a failed LG fan motor
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| The freezer is fine but the fridge is warm | The evaporator fan is not pushing cold air through to the fridge section |
| A new buzzing, clicking or scraping from the back of the freezer | The fan is catching ice or its bearing is going |
| Everything is warm and the compressor runs constantly | Air is not moving across the evaporator; it ices over and cooling stops |
| The fan runs when the door is open, then stops dead | A failing motor or a faulty door switch; test by holding the switch |
Is it really the fan motor?
Ice is the great pretender. Pull the back panel of the freezer: if the evaporator is a block of ice, the fan may be fine and the defrost system (heater, thermostat or timer) is the fault. Switch the fridge off with the doors open for a full day, let it thaw, and see whether the fan runs and the fridge cools. Only a fan that is quiet, free of ice and still dead is a dead fan.
Where is the model sticker on a LG fridge
Inside the fresh food compartment, on a side wall at about crisper height, or behind the crisper drawer. Write the full code down, letters and numbers, or photograph it: the suffix matters, and the badge on the front of the machine is not enough. Our LG model number guide has photos of each spot.
Which LG fan motor is listed for your model
One row per model number as it appears on the sticker. The part column is the listing title, which names every model that listing covers. LG shares platforms with DC, Westinghouse, so some listings carry that name; the model numbers are what count.

Replacing the fan motor: the job in order
- Switch off at the wall and empty the freezer. Remove the shelves and the screws that hold the back panel in place.
- Lift the panel out carefully; ice may hold it. Photograph the fan, its plug and its bracket.
- Unplug the fan and unscrew or unclip its bracket. On some models the blade pulls off the old shaft and goes on the new motor.
- Install the new motor with the blade facing the same way, plug in, and spin the blade by hand to make sure it clears the housing.
- Reinstall the panel and shelves, switch on, and listen for the fan once the compressor starts (it may wait until the door has been shut a minute).
- Check the fridge temperature after a few hours.
DIY or a repairer?
For most people this is a DIY job: a fan motor is a modest part and the fix is an hour with a screwdriver. A repairer’s call-out in Australia is in the $100–165 band before the part, so the saving is the labour. Use a licensed repairer if the appliance is hard-wired, if you find burnt or melted wiring, if gas or sealed refrigerant is involved, or if the new part does not cure the fault, because the next suspect is usually the control board and that is fitted after diagnosis, not before.
Frequently asked questions
The fridge is warm and the freezer is cold. Is it the fan or something else?
Open the freezer and listen with the door switch held in: a healthy fan whirs within a minute. Silence, or a grinding noise, points at the fan. If you hear the fan but the fridge is still warm, the air channel between the two compartments is iced up or blocked, so defrost the fridge fully with the doors open before you order anything.
Is the fan motor the same across the range?
No. Motors differ in voltage, mounting, shaft and the plug. Match the full model number on your sticker against the listing title.
Why did it fail?
Ice build-up loads the bearing, and a slow defrost system means the fan is pushing against ice every day. If the evaporator was iced solid, check the defrost parts as well.
Do I need a repairer?
A fan is a plug and a bracket behind a panel, and no refrigerant is touched. Sealed-system work, which this is not, needs a licensed person.
Can I run the fridge without the fan while I wait?
It will keep the freezer going but the fridge section will warm. Move perishables to an esky or another fridge.
