Check 1, listen for the motor (free). Start a cycle and put your ear near the machine. Can you hear the motor running, a steady hum or whir, even though the drum isn’t moving? Motor running plus no drum movement means a broken belt. If instead you hear a heavy buzz and the machine trips or goes silent, that points to the motor or capacitor rather than the belt.
Check 2, turn the drum by hand (free). Turn the dryer off at the wall first. Open the door and spin the drum with your hand. Does it spin freely and easily, like there’s nothing holding it? That’s the classic broken-belt signature: with no belt, there’s zero resistance. If the drum feels stiff or notchy, or grinds and squeals, you’re looking at a seized drum bearing instead, not a belt.
Check 3, look for the belt (a few minutes, one screwdriver). With the power off, you can usually peek inside the cabinet or under the drum and spot the belt. Check 4, consider the motor, capacitor or bearing (less common). If the belt is intact and on its pulley but the drum still won’t turn under power, the fault is more likely the motor or capacitor (when the motor strains or won’t start) or a seized bearing (when the drum was stiff to turn by hand in Check 2).
